Spalding rolls! Spalding chalked up an impressive 48-0 win over Palloti Friday night. The Cavaliers defense showed up big time in this blow out win, as the offense easily sliced through that panthers defense. Below we are going to take a look at some standout players on both sides of the ball. In two weeks the Cavs match up against WCAC power house Gonzaga, and what I saw Friday night built some excitement for that match up.

Defensive Standouts

[player_tooltip player_id="90532" first="Lavain" last="Scruggs"] - #2, DB, 6’3 190lbs, 2022

Scruggs showed why he is one of the top DB’s in the state with a long INT for a touchdown. With this big play he showed that he has the speed to take it the distance by out running one of the top 2023 WR’s and Pallotti’s quarterback on his way to the end zone. One thing that really stands out about this kid is his eye discipline. A lot of young DB get caught peeking into the back field or have thier eyes stuck on the quarterback, he does a good job of focusing on his assignment. He is patient in his backpedal and reads the developing routes very well from his safety position.

[embed]https://twitter.com/CoachCoreydmv/status/1436489734956650497?s=20[/embed]

[player_tooltip player_id="90519" first="Kellan" last="Wyatt"] - #1, LB, 6’2 225lbs, 2022

Wyatt Set the edge for the Cavs this entire game, nothing got around this quick big body. He was a presence on the field in the run game and pass rushing. He had 2 sacks, a gang of tackles, and showed some versatility running down on punt coverage and made plays also. On Scruggs interception guess who, Wyatt got a hit on the quarterback on a delayed blitz, and at the tail end of the play he was Scruggs lead blocker into the end zone. Wyatt demonstrated perfect pass coverage on a play where he lined up as a blitzer and dropped back into coverage at the snap of the ball. His eyes went straight to the 2 receivers on his side who ran a switch concept off of the line of scrimmage. He didn’t fall for it and chase the the slot receiver, he immediately got into his backpedal and found the outside receiver coming in. I like that he stayed square and didn’t turn his hips and shoulders to try to hurry and get over top of the switch receiver. This allowed him to drop directly into the passing lane, his eyes got back to the quarterback a split second too late as the ball bounced off of his shoulder pad. He made an effort to catch the interception but he could only get a finger tip on it. Anytime you get hit in the face with the ball in coverage I’d say that’s a job well done.

[player_tooltip player_id="90519" first="Kellan" last="Wyatt"]’s Sack vs Pallotti

[player_tooltip player_id="90625" first="Mansoor" last="Delane"] - #4, DB,6’1 180lbs, 2022

Delane contributed to the defensive party too with an INT and return of his own. He put his elusiveness on display with a nice "one-two" juke combo then headed down the sideline. Being able to turn an interception into a return is valuable in a DB, showing that he is elusive after the INT will add some stock to this already high ranked 4-star DB.

[embed]https://twitter.com/CoachCoreydmv/status/1436488645595303952?s=20[/embed]

Offensive Standouts

Jordan Harris - #3, RB/DB, 2022

Harris scored two of the Cavs many TD’s Friday night, a 60 yard carry and a 45 yard screen pass. Harris is dangerous out on the edge of the defense, you better get a body on him and it better be quick! On his screen pass for a TD he explodes out of the backfield and demonstrates very nice acceleration as he scampered in for the score untouched. With his low center of gravity and explosiveness like that he should not be underestimated standing at 5’9, there’s a lot of burst behind his 185lbs.

Notable Players

Nick Gutierrez - #11, QB, 6’1 170lbs, 2022 - Very athletic and poised on his rollouts. Can turn a broken play into a huge gain with his feet. Big time lacrosse player also.

Jason Robertson - #33 LB, 6’4 218, 2022 - Recorded 2 sacks.

RJ Newton - #8 WR, 2024 - Had an impressive contested catch in the end zone, but his foot just grazed the out of bounds line. Eye grabbing size for a sophomore. Definitely a player I will have my eye on this season.
