Week one is in the books for the high school football season in the state of Arkansas. We continue to learn more about the teams and the players as approach the third Friday of play in the state. For example, which teams have explosive players and offenses, and which ones are solid on the defensive side of the ball are something we are paying attention. Let’s take a look at some of the things we learned last Friday.
The first thing that the rest of the state is starting to pay attention is that the Van Buren Pointers are a dangerous football team. Coach Crosby Tuck has some talented players at key positions that are lighting up the scoreboards for the Pointers. Quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="155329" first="Bryce" last="Perkins"] and wide receiver [player_tooltip player_id="91976" first="Malachi" last="Henry"] from a dangerous pass-catch duo that will drive opposing defensive coordinators crazy over the next few years. Look out for the Van Buren Pointers as the season progresses.
Meanwhile, another dangerous pass-catch is forty miles north in Fayetteville. Quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="75105" first="Bladen" last="Fike"] and wide receiver [player_tooltip player_id="75066" first="Isaiah" last="Sategna"] have lit up two quality opponents over the past two weeks. Both Conway and Owasso have watched Fike and Sategna connect numerous times for touchdowns. Fayetteville is a team that has the potential to continue lighting up the scoreboards as Fike and his receiving corps continue to develop the chemistry early in the season.
One team that looked extremely dangerous in central Arkansas this week was the Parkview Patriots. [player_tooltip player_id="117318" first="Jaylon" last="White"] had no trouble connecting with wide receiver [player_tooltip player_id="75099" first="Parker" last="Perry"] on touchdown passes this past Friday. Perry’s 6-6 frame makes him an impressive target in the red zone and a player that must be accounted for on the field. Parkview is a talented team that will have the opportunity to open some eyes over the next few weeks in the state of Arkansas.
The Booneville Bearcats have used a strong ground game and an impressive defense that swarms to the ball to make opponent’s lives miserable. Quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="92902" first="Randon" last="Ray"] and running back/linebacker [player_tooltip player_id="149579" first="Dax" last="Goff"] form an impressive one-two punch for the Bearcats. Booneville blasted Ozark on Friday night and in the process made it clear to future opponents that Goff and Ray must be accounted for in order to defeat the Bearcats.
Booneville was not the only team to take on a traditional rival in week one of the football season. The Farmington Cardinals took on the Prairie Grove Tigers in the Battle of Highway 62. Farmington’s offense continues to light up opposing defenses. Last week the Cardinals defeated Rogers Heritage this week the Cardinals jumped all over the Tigers. [player_tooltip player_id="157343" first="Cameron" last="Vanzant"], [player_tooltip player_id="123848" first="Caden" last="Elsik"], and [player_tooltip player_id="149539" first="Hunter" last="Marshall"] and company on the offensive line is making opposing defenses take notice.
We will cap off week one with one more look at players that performed impressively during week one. Prep RedZone Arkansas will also preview some compelling matchups that will take place this coming Friday. We have one more week of impressive nonconference matchups before we turn our attention to the conference slate of games in the state of Arkansas.
