It sure does feel good to have football back in full force. The first three weeks of Mississippi high school ball have already given us a ton of instant classics, and players from around the state are beginning to emerge as this year’s top dogs. Per Maxpreps.com, these are the current statistical leaders in the offensive categories.
PASSING
[player_tooltip player_id="104069" first="Deandre" last="Smith"] | Greenville Christian
1063 yards, 12 TDs, 3 INTs
The front runner for No. 1 QB in Mississippi has been on a mission this season. Smith has passed the ball accurately downfield and has shown improvement in his overall mechanics. This is a guy that can make any throw in the playbook and is a natural winner. Greenville Christian looks to be the favorite to win the state championship in their classification, so watch for Smith to continue to produce.
John White | Madison Ridgeland Academy
1044 yards, 11 TDs, 7 INTs
The 2024 first year field general at MRA started the season off a bit rough, but has bounced back since then. White has an extremely high ceiling as a quarterback prospect and will end up being one of the best in the nation of his class. As he begins to settle down into this new offense, look for him to cut back on his turnovers and keep slinging the football around.
Dawson Phillips | Mooreville
942 yards, 8 TDs, 4 INTs
Phillips, a senior QB from Mooreville High, has been a guy that has emerged onto our radar. He operates well from the pocket and can step up to evade the rush. Phillips processes the field well and knows where to distribute the ball. Although Mooreville has started 0-3, look for them to bounce back soon.
Jack Patterson | Northpoint Christian
849 yards, 9 TDs, 2 INTs
Another 2024 quarterback, Patterson has begun to draw some attention recently. In his first few games, Patterson has been extremely confident in his decision making and his arm, letting the ball fly downfield to his intended receiver. Patterson has very good anticipation for such a young player, as he throws his receivers open in veteran like style. Excited to continue watching him moving forward.
Thomas Dyess | Ridgeland
788 yards, 9 TDs, 2 INTs
Dyess has been another intriguing story this season. Up to this week, he has led Ridgeland to a 2-1 record with a fairly difficult schedule ahead. Dyess throws downfield well, especially to his favorite target WR [player_tooltip player_id="106165" first="Ayden" last="Williams"]. Continuing to watch him closely throughout the rest of the season.
RECEIVING
Jacob Scott | Mooreville
28 catches, 546 yards, 7 TDs
Scott flashed early with a huge game against Booneville. This is the type of player that coaches love to have. Scott is a sure handed receiver who understands space and can turn up field after the catch.
[player_tooltip player_id="104211" first="Isaiah" last="Atkins"] | Harrison Central
13 catches, 404 yards, 5 TDs
One of our favorite players this preseason, [player_tooltip player_id="104211" first="Isaiah" last="Atkins"] has been producing at a ridiculously high level so far. With only 13 catches on the season, he has scored on 5 of them. Atkins is a big play machine and can take any short pass to the house at any point. While he currently lists some in-state JuCo offers, it would not be surprising to see the stud WR add some FCS or G5 offers soon.
[player_tooltip player_id="106165" first="Ayden" last="Williams"] | Ridgeland
18 catches, 377 yards, 5 TDs
The 2023 sensation has been doing what he has been doing for a while now this season. [player_tooltip player_id="106165" first="Ayden" last="Williams"] is one of the best jump ball catchers in the state and has great athleticism in the open field. With his precise route running, he could end up being one of the most complete receivers in MS in a while.
[player_tooltip player_id="104548" first="Chris" last="Bell"] | Greenville Christian
14 catches, 357 yards, 6 TDs
The Southern Miss commit has looked like one of the most dominant players in Mississippi this season. A recent transfer into Greenville Christian, Bell has had no issue with finding chemistry with Smith to form one of the best duos of the year. Although Bell is committed right now, don’t be surprised if other schools start trying to get involved with the do it all wide out.
[player_tooltip player_id="104209" first="Davis" last="Dalton"] | Madison Ridgeland Academy
25 catches, 353 yards, 1 TD
Another Southern Miss commit, Dalton has been the go to receiver at MRA this season. Although he hasn’t found the end zone a whole lot, Dalton is still one of the best natural hands catchers in his class. Look for him to start scoring more in the coming weeks as MRA’s schedule continues.
RUSHING
[player_tooltip player_id="104161" first="Dayan" last="Bilbo"] | Vancleave
126 carries, 871 yards, 10 TDs
Bilbo exploded onto the scene in game one this season, putting up over 400 of his yards in a single night. This running back is explosive in the open field and can do it all with the ball in his hands. Although he may already have a ton of carries, Bilbo is built for it. He continues to get more dominant as the game goes on. Looking for him to start getting some college looks soon.
Ja’karius Grant | West Lauderdale
98 carries, 672 yards, 6 TDs
Grant has been crushing teams this season. Averaging just around 200 yards a game, there has been no answer for the West Lauderdale product. Grant has shown great burst in the open field and continues to bully any defender in his path. Grant lists an offer from EMCC, but watch for that list to continue to grow soon.
Kris Ginn | Columbia Academy
82 carries, 600 yards, 8 TDs
Ginn has been a player that has snuck onto our radar this season. With over 600 yards so far, Ginn has been an absolute force. He has a strong, downhill running style that makes opposing defenses nervous. Watch for him to continue adding to his stats in the coming weeks.
Omar Scott | Winston Academy
64 carries, 574 yards, 6 TDs
The 2024 running back has become a prospect and will be featured in our next rankings update. Scott stands at 6’2" and has great long speed in the open field. He sees holes quickly open and can hit them fast. Really like the upside he shows at a young age.
[player_tooltip player_id="104069" first="Deandre" last="Smith"] | Greenville Christian
36 carries, 462 yards, 5 TDs
No surprise here, but Smith can do it all. This guy looks like the overall Mr. Football front runner.
