Week 4 of the season included some shootouts, lots of rushing yards in some games, a six-touchdown performance and siblings leading the team to a victory.
Without further ado, here’s some notable performances in the Kansas City metro area.
<strong>RB [player_tooltip player_id="96151" first="Blake" last="Heitman"], 5-11, 180, Odessa, Class of 2022</strong>
This is a first of a few familiar names that will appear again after earlier recognition. The fullback didn’t get his usual 100-plus yard game but he did score three touchdowns to help Odessa beat rival Oak Grove. The win was the 28th in a row for the Bulldogs.
<strong>RB [player_tooltip player_id="96261" first="KJ" last="Smith"], 5-9, 180, Kearney, Class of 2022</strong>
The senior accounted for all five touchdowns in his team’s 35-0 win over Ruskin, getting the Bulldogs in the win column for the first time this year. Smith had one touchdown catch but his his damage on the ground, running for 282 yards on 23 carries and 4 TDs.
<strong>RB/WR [player_tooltip player_id="185385" first="Jacorey" last="Love"], 5-10, 179, Center, 2024</strong>
Gave his team a 21-20 lead with 2 minutes to go but Basehor-Linwood (Kan.) rallied to win in the final minute. Love ran for three touchdowns and had 156 yards on 17 carries for the Yellowjackets.
<strong>RB [player_tooltip player_id="204679" first="Anthony" last="Miller"], 5-10, 180, William Chrisman, 2023</strong>
The junior posted his second 200-plus yard game of the season against Park Hill South. He got the ball 30 times and ran for 220 yards and scored a touchdown for the Bears in the loss to the Class 6-ranked Panthers.
<strong>RB [player_tooltip player_id="199482" first="Darrien" last="Jones"], 6-0, 190, Park Hill South, 2023</strong>
Another junior that stood out in the aforementioned game is Jones, who ran for a season-best 140 yards on 13 carries and had four touchdowns. It was part of a 377-yard rushing attack by the Panthers. Fellow junior <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="103404" first="Briggs" last="Bartosh"]</strong> rolled up 115 yards on 15 carries and two scores.
<strong>WR/Edge [player_tooltip player_id="177069" first="Jayshawn" last="Ross"], 6-4, 220, St. Pius X, 2024</strong>
With offers already in hand from Kansas and K-State, Ross had a solid all-around game to help the Warriors beat Maryville, 14-13. He had seven catches for 107 yards and on defense had five tackles, two sacks and two tackles for loss.
<strong>RB [player_tooltip player_id="177944" first="Quincey" last="Baker"], 5-8, 185, Lee’s Summit North, 2023</strong>
After a slow start to the season, a combined 122 yards in two weeks, Baker has run for more than 100 the past two. He had a season-high best 187 yards and 3 TDs to help the Broncos knocked off Ray-Pec. He had 141 yards on the ground in a win against Liberty the week prior.
<strong>QB [player_tooltip player_id="204680" first="Cam" last="Zaun"], 5-11, 155, St. Michael the Archangel, 2024</strong>
The sophomore came in relief of older brother <strong>Dillon Zaun</strong>, who was injured, and kept the offense for the Guardians going. ’Little’ Zaun passed for 154 yards and three touchdowns, including TD passes of 49 and 79 yards. TE <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="177936" first="Mike" last="Haggerty"]</strong> had three catches for 118 yards and the 49-yard score from [player_tooltip player_id="204680" first="Cam" last="Zaun"]. Dillon Zaun, when in the game, was 5 for 6 for 102 yards and a TD.
<strong>QB [player_tooltip player_id="177888" first="Kendrick" last="Bell"], 6-3, 170, Park Hill, 2023</strong>
Bell continues to add his name to the list week after week, this time after a six-touchdown night against Blue Springs, helping the Trojans roll to a 50-0 win. Bell passed for 191 yards and four touchdown but showed off his dual-threat ability by running for a pair of scores.
<strong>QB [player_tooltip player_id="198122" first="Jaron" last="Saunders"], 6-1, 180, St. Joseph Lafayette, 2022</strong>
Weeks removed from setting a state record for passing yards in a game, Saunders didn’t put up the same numbers in a win against Savannah but came up with clutch plays. Saunders threw a touchdown pass with 37 seconds left to help the Irish pick up a 56-49 win and move to 4-0 on the year. Saunders completed 25 of 38 passes for 345 yards and five TDs. This game featured more than 120 plays and 1,100 yards of combined total offense.
<strong>DB [player_tooltip player_id="204681" first="Bryan" last="Haney"], 5-11, 160, Lee’s Summit West, 2022</strong>
The first of two stars from this game between Liberty and Lee’s Summit West, which ended with Lee’s Summit West coming up short on a pass in the end zone on the final seconds and lost 28-20. Haney, an all-state hurdler, made a pair of big plays early for the Titans. He had a 48-yard punt return for a touchdown and added a pick 6 in the second quarter to make it 14-0 at the time.
<strong>RB [player_tooltip player_id="37448" first="Wentric" last="Williams III"], 6-0, 185, Liberty, 2022</strong>
After two weeks without many yards, Williams got going and the Blue Jays picked up a win. He ran for 140 yards and three scores and caught a touchdown as well.
