The 2020 State runner-up Cadillac Vikings defeated Fruitport 28-12 in what was a slow, ground and pound win. Cadillac showed out, running a great veer offense that does what veer does best. It was a balanced and very fundamental victory that largely came down to discipline. Let’s explore how the game actually played out.
First Half
The game started out slow as Cadillac had their first drive halt at Fruitport’s 30. Fruitport then went 3 and out to punt it right back to Cadillac. After the initial lull, Cadillac drove down the field led by runs from Aden Gurden and Chris Reinhold Jr. Just before a nice interception by Collin Jolman. It was then Fruitport took possession at their own 2 yd line, and this is when things began to get weird. Fruitport’s offense stalled and they were left with 4th and long from inside the 5. Shockingly, they go for it with a deep pass- and it’s intercepted way out at the 30! Immediately following the interception, Cadillac gets called for unsportsmanlike conduct, and just like that, a few questionable plays from both teams resulted in Cadillac’s ball at midfield. Kaleb McKinley then went on to score for Cadillac taking a 7-0 lead. Shortly after, Cadillac drove down the field again and scored after their defense forced multiple sacks. Cadillac went into the break with a 14-0 lead.

Second Half
It was obvious that Fruitport had adjusted their offensive gameplan as they immediately drove down the field to score on a nice strike from [player_tooltip player_id="93699" first="Gavin" last="Reames"] to [player_tooltip player_id="99358" first="Camden" last="Farrell"]. From that point on it was business as usual for Cadillac as they kept winding that clock and controlling the pace with that veer offense. Fruitport struggled to get things going throughout, despite an amazing performance from ’24 G Richard Wiggins IV, and great poise by [player_tooltip player_id="93699" first="Gavin" last="Reames"]. Cadillac matched their first-half total, as Fruitport managed to strike once more at the buzzer to make it a more respectable 28-12.

In the end, Cadillac was the more disciplined team. Both teams had their fair share of penalties and mistakes, but it was obvious that Cadillac is more fundamentally sound, and came in with a better game plan. Hats off to the Vikings on a solid victory!
