The way Florida teams bolted out of the game – competing against some of the best in Florida and across the country – things were bound to slow down.
With district play under way across the state, there are still some other contests that fans and college coaches want to see.
One of the better games this week – 3A powerhouse Hollywood Chaminade Madonna, fresh off a huge 7-0 win over Georgia’s No. 1 team Buford, was to play against two-time defending 2A state champion Hialeah Champagnat Catholic was called off because of Covid.
That game would have featured five state titles in the past four years and 10 consecutive trips to this state finals.
Instead, we have some other good games to keep an eye on this Friday. Here are 10 to check out:
No. 5 Sanford Seminole (4-0) at Daytona Beach Mainland (2-2). On the surface, this may not be such a great game – with the defending state champions playing some tremendous football and remaining unbeaten. But the Bucs have played very well the past few weeks and this is a sport that anything can happen. We will see. The Seminoles are huge favorites.
Davie Western (3-1) at No. 7 Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas (3-1). The one thing about south Florida powers is that they do not shy away from competition – as you will see in the next five weeks. Since being beaten by Chaminade-Madonna, Western has been sound and have been looking forward to this game. The Raiders shook off the loss to state power Tampa Jesuit and are at home for a game that would be another step in getting back to the 7A state finals.
No. 9 Jacksonville Trinity Christian (4-0) at Lake City Columbia (3-1). After a huge scare last week against Clearwater Academy International, head coach Verlon Dorminey goes for win 301 against a very tough program that is loaded with quality talent. Trinity Christian is looking to stay around the top in the polls – and a win would solidify that.
No. 10 Port St. Lucie Treasure Coast (3-0) at No. 24 Cocoa (2-1). The Titans are still feeling great after the win over Plantation American Heritage that changed the way everyone felt about this program, but tonight’s game against the Tigers is another level, and they are playing a team that has been tested every week. This could turn out to be the game of the night – for sure.
Jacksonville University Christian (3-1) at No. 16 Jacksonville Bolles (4-0). Another potential thriller between two state runner-ups from last year, and while University Christian is a solid team and continues to compete against everyone, the 4A Bulldogs may have a bit too much. But this is a Duval County game that will have plenty of fans watching.
No. 17 Orlando Edgewater (3-1) at No. 11 Apopka (3-0). Talk about a potential game of the week, here is a contest that the unbeaten Blue Darters will have at home, and while they have not lost, their games have been close. For the two-time defending 7A state runner-up Eagles, this is a chance to once again show that this is one of the best teams in the state, losing only to No. 3 Venice, which has one of the best teams in Florida. Very competitive central Florida game.
No. 19 Tampa Bay Tech (3-0) at Tampa Gaither (3-1). For the first four weeks of the season, Hillsborough County football fans have been treated to some very exciting football, and this matchup is expected to be one of the best. Tampa Bay Tech is loaded, playing solid football on both sides of the ball. But do not take Gaither lightly. They have the talent and coaching to make this one of the better games in the region on this Friday evening.
Clearwater Academy International (3-1) at Jacksonville Raines (2-1). A return trip to Duval County for a program that many have no clue about, but as they showed against Trinity Christian last week, this is a team that can score points. The Vikings can certainly jump back into the state picture with a win here. They also have some impressive talent, but will it be enough to stop a solid program?
Deerfield Beach (3-1) at Rockledge (4-0). One of those games that many are not following closely, but maybe they should. One of the favorites to win it all in 8A before the season, the Bucks lost to 7A power Fort Lauderdale Dillard, but have played impressive football since. Rockledge is never going to shy away from competition. They haven’t fared well against south Florida competition in the past and are looking to change all of that tonight.
