As we head toward the third week, the attention is on the top teams, and which one will fall this Friday night?
With so many elite teams upended this past week, it gave other programs an opportunity to step into the spotlight.
Tonight, we will see several games that will produce some amazing results, and that is what has made this early season something to embrace.
Here are 10 games tonight that you may not want to miss:
No. 12 Miami Northwestern at No. 1 Bradenton IMG Academy. What teams in south Florida have long been known for is stepping up to the plate against anyone. But as we know IMG Academy is NOT just anyone and head coach Max Edwards and the Bulls will have to work overtime to keep this close. Both teams are 2-0, but….
No. 18 Cocoa at No. 3 Venice. Even though Coach John Peacock’s team has played just one game, it was a blowout against two-time defending 7A state runner-up Orlando Edgewater. The Tigers have won two thrillers against quality talent, but the Indians are not your normal team. They are for real and will have another chance to prove it.
Valrico Bloomingdale at No. 4 Tampa Jesuit. The only edge the Bulls may have in this game may be the Tigers are still in the clouds after pulling off a win against national power St. Thomas Aquinas, but don’t count on it. They showed the past three years that this program is one of the best in Florida.
No. 6 Orlando Jones at Orlando Edgewater. For the past two years, Coach Cameron Duke and his Eagles have been one of the best in the state – and while last week’s setback at power Venice stung a bit, there is plenty of talent on hand. The Tigers have been one of the elite programs in Central Florida – and after two strong wins to start the year, this game is a true measuring stick – for both teams.
No. 10 Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas at No. 9 Plantation American Heritage. No matter what you want to say about south Florida schools, it better include the fact that they will run from no opponent. This is a game that was not even scheduled when the season began, but both coaches Roger Harriott and Pat Surtain stepped up to the plate to play this game – even though both programs have a crazy good schedule. St. Thomas lost last week to Tampa Jesuit, and the Patriots upended Chaminade-Madonna. Take your pick here. Both are stacked with elite prospects and great coaching.
No. 13 Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna at Miami Christopher Columbus. Both teams suffered losses last week – and while the Lions still have one of the state’s best defensive teams, Coach Dave Dunn and the Explorers are still very much a team still rebuilding and replacing several seniors who departed. Another great game.
No. 15 Miami Palmetto at Miami Killian. The “Big Cat” game between the Panthers and Cougars has been played for decades, and while Killian has often held the upper hand, the Panthers have done quite well the past four years, laying down a solid foundation. A rivalry that really means something!
No. 20 Tampa Hillsborough at No. 25 Tampa Bay Tech. Okay, the only thing to say here is which teams is the contender and which one is still fighting an uphill battle. Early season, two of the top teams in the Bay area, and of course, throughout Florida. This is a game that will tell us all plenty about both programs.
No. 21 Lakeland at Lake Wales. This is yet another one of those games where a pair of 2-0 teams come in with so much to prove. Veteran head coach Bill Castle and his team have improved greatly over spring – and Lake Wales is certainly playing at a high level.
No. 23 Jacksonville Bolles at St. Augustine. This could be an underrated game this week – with both teams coming in unbeaten – this will be a test for the Jackets and Bulldogs. No doubt that Bolles has really made a major statement in the first two games and have talent on both sides of the ball.
