The TRL is the SEC of Oregon High School Football, with half of the state’s top 10 6A teams coming out of the conference. Have a look at who might end up winning the league as it’s truly up for grabs. Potential pre-season rankings are listed below.
#2 West Linn- The Lions will be one of the youngest teams in the state, but could be a powerhouse for years to come with the talent coming up through the ranks. Chris Miller is one of the best to ever coach HS ball in Oregon. I would otherwise not give them a shot in the state’s toughest conference, being so young.
Expect Junior’s [player_tooltip player_id="147247" first="Earl" last="Ingle"] and [player_tooltip player_id="110180" first="Mark" last="Hamper"] to have monster seasons, with double digit Sophomore’s potentially starting, and being considered one of the top classes (2024) ever to represent.
I believe a lot will be determined later in the year by how much time the young guys get during the regular season. They lose an incredibly talented senior class with a line, which is never easily made up for even at West Linn.
#4 Lake Oswego- Much like Chris Miller, Coach Steve Coury is the real deal. After losing the likes of Oregon POY Casey Filkins, and a ridiculously talented 2021 class (appearing in back-to-back state title games), the Lakers came back stronger than ever finishing as my #4 6A team last season.
D1 projected Safety [player_tooltip player_id="28858" first="Dylan" last="Layne"] was exceptional all year long, with his brother [player_tooltip player_id="28887" first="Jack" last="Layne"] stepping up and looking like one of the state’s top QB’s. This combo along with one of Oregon’s leading candidates for Oregon 6A POY honors in [player_tooltip player_id="28882" first="Gabe" last="Olvera"], gives LO a real shot in the Fall. [player_tooltip player_id="28890" first="Austin" last="Leykam"] is one of the region’s best linemen, just not highly ranked due to size. If these individuals step up like they did last season they will be in the conference and state title hunt again this year.
#5 Tualatin- On paper the T Wolves look like the top team in the state. They are loaded with D1 talent, led by the likes of Senior’s [player_tooltip player_id="28846" first="Cole" last="Prusia"], [player_tooltip player_id="28854" first="Jackson" last="Jones"] and [player_tooltip player_id="28843" first="Malik" last="Ross"], along with a super talented underclass group.
That said as Tualatin got absolutely smoked 37-6 to close out the season, by a Lake O team without all the big names, stars, and scholarship offers. One has to wonder what the deal is and whether or not talented big men like senior’s [player_tooltip player_id="108147" first="Kellen" last="Hale"] 6-5 210 22’, [player_tooltip player_id="28857" first="Jackson" last="Biedritzky"] 6-4 210 22’, and D1 projected Jr. [player_tooltip player_id="147240" first="Richie" last="Anderson"] 6-4 220 can make up the difference. I do have Tualatin figuring it out and playing Lakeridge for a state championship.
#6 Lakeridge- I have the Pacers winning the state title next season, if that’s any indication of how highly I think of this group. QB [player_tooltip player_id="110242" first="Ryan" last="Oliver"] will be a major D1 recruit and potentially one of the most offered quarterbacks in the nation before he is done. He is that good. One of the country’s best for 2024 [player_tooltip player_id="152356" first="Joey" last="Olsen"] and Junior standout [player_tooltip player_id="110204" first="Baylor" last="Corbin"] both return, along with maybe the top LB/Safety squad in Oregon.
[player_tooltip player_id="143911" first="Jake" last="Reichle"] will hold multiple D1 offers projecting as a SS or WLB. The experience they have at backer is second to none with returning conference POY [player_tooltip player_id="28862" first="Nui" last="Tovey"], what will be one of LHS’s all-time leading tacklers in [player_tooltip player_id="28864" first="Zac" last="Waible"], and elite Sophomore [player_tooltip player_id="152332" first="Ethan" last="Biondine"].
Look for Lakeridge to get better and better as the season progresses, culminating in a deep playoff run. It could very well be an ALL TRL state title game.
#9 Tigard- This program is always one of the state’s most consistent, although I do see them falling off a bit in comparison to previous seasons. The loss of [player_tooltip player_id="28836" first="Keenan" last="Speer-Johnson"] who made the move to Mountainside is big.
One of the state’s fastest rising 23’s [player_tooltip player_id="147254" first="AJ" last="Perez"] should be heavily used and keyed upon by opponents. This is another obstacle with KSJ leaving, as they can now double team Perez.
The Tigers always have guys and they will compete, but there isn’t a [player_tooltip player_id="28700" first="Drew" last="Carter"] type, or depth at some of the positions where they previously excelled.
Have a look at the previously posted, hypothetical 32 team bracket, which has Lakeridge beating Tualatin in the state title game.
