A rare SCHSL-SCISA meeting on the gridiron was a first look for both Myrtle Beach and Trinity Collegiate.
The two got together Friday at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium in a hastily thrown-together match-up of two teams clearly on different levels. Still, the coaching staffs each got what they wanted out this one - which was a look at their teams against live competition during a preseason which may see little of it due to quarantines and further precautions.
Here were the biggest takeaways Prep Red Zone noticed:
<strong>Myrtle Beach Standouts</strong>
Everyone expects [player_tooltip player_id="59494" first="Ryan" last="Burger"] and [player_tooltip player_id="59464" first="Adam" last="Randall"] to hook up plenty during their final go-around with the Seahawks. Those hoping to see a glimpse of them got that opportunity.
Burger and Randall connected for two early touchdown passes, including one in which Randall fought off a defender right his right hand, hauled in the throw with his left and took it to the house. On another, Randall lost his footing, managed to hold himself off the ground and got to the end zone. A third would-be touchdown was called back when another receiver was offside.

Freshmen rarely make their way onto the varsity roster at Myrtle Beach (<strong>Luke Doty</strong>, for instance, was parked on the JV team during his first year of high school). But 6-foot-4, 170-pound receiver <strong>Jon Simmons</strong> - already known for lighting up middle school gyms on the basketball court - gives the Seahawks another huge target near the end zone. He broke free on a second-quarter play and hauled in an easy score Friday.
Linebacker [player_tooltip player_id="146360" first="Cam" last="Ward"] is going to be the shortest player on the field most of the year, but he’s a big hitter who laid out a couple opposing players on Friday. Ward won’t be pulling double duty this year, as sophomore tailback <strong>Malachi Washington</strong> appears to be taking most of the meaningful reps there so far.
Defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id="153241" first="Tre" last="Phillips"] looks even more impressive. The 6-foot-3, 230-pound was disruptive against Trinity Collegiate’s wing sets and was in the backfield on most plays that took more than a split second to develop.
<strong>Trinity Collegiate Standouts</strong>
No big surprise here, but [player_tooltip player_id="91178" first="Reggion" last="Bennett"] was given plenty of carries early and often against the Seahawks.
Anyone who didn’t already know he was a lefty, though, does now. Even though the play was called backs, Bennett broke from the tightly wound pack on an end-around and slung the ball 35 yards downfield to an open receiver.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>

Bennett had more than 2,000 total yards from scrimmage in 10 games last year. Nearly 1,900 of those came on the ground. He also had 24 total touchdowns. It led to an offer and commitment to Buffalo.
Receiver/running back/defensive back <strong>Tre McLeod</strong> is going to be all over the field again this fall, at least if Friday’s scrimmage was any indication. McLeod, who is verbally committed to Furman, can run, catch and defend from one snap to the next.
