Evan probably wondered if he would someday get an opportunity to play at the next level, let alone at an FBS school like the Lobos.
He doesn’t have to wonder anymore.
UNM head coach Danny Gonzales and his staff offered Wysong earlier this week, potentially reuniting the Wysong brothers in cherry and silver in a couple of years.
“I had a few conversations with the coaches before they offered,” Evan told Prep Redzone New Mexico. “It’s a feeling that doesn’t come around too often. Time really just slowed down for me. I had to process this and think about ‘Is this actually happening?’ I’m extremely thankful for everyone in my life that’s helped me get to this point.”
Wysong said Gonzales, who had made recruiting New Mexico prospects a high priority, extended the offer.
“Coach Gonzales was the one who actually offered me,” Wysong said. “I’ve spoken to Coach Blackmon and Coach Howes in person.”
Wysong’s athleticism (he plays QB and WR) and speed (4.52 in the 40) likely played integral roles in UNM’s decision to offer him. The Lobos haven’t yet decided which position best suits Wysong at the major college level, so he’s being recruited as an athlete.
WEEK 1 SCHEDULE UPDATE: Four games scheduled for Week 1 of the New Mexico High School football season have been cancelled for different reasons: Rio Rancho-Goddard and West Las Vegas-Moriarty have been cancelled due to Covid-19 protocols. The Hornets reportedly have fewer than 20 players on its active roster and are reluctant to face Class 6A schools. Highland principal Marco Harris told the Albuquerque Journal that HHS will evaluate its situation on a week-to-week basis. Eldorado will be awarded a forfeit victory.
Sunday, West Las Vegas AD Richard Trip tweeted that the Dons were working on rescheduling for Week 1. Nice 5A-3A matchup. WLV hasn't played a game in nearly 2 years, so you know they wanted to play a game badly in Week 1. https://t.co/p8ABvTYHbp
