Former San Diego Charger Qb Coach Philip Rivers led his St. Michael team to victory Thursday night against McIntosh. As Coach Rivers watch his team end the first quarter with 27 points; he also watched family enjoy the night as he looked on at his two sons spotting the ball, former Athens and Decatur High Coach Steve Philips his father in the stands along with mother, his brother Stephen alongside on the staff and nieces and nephews enjoy the atmosphere.
The game was put on notice to run a six-minute hot clock coming back from halftime after being up 42-0.
St. Michaels Junior Ezra Sexton recorded the first two TDs of the season on a run of 11 yards and 6 yards. With 4.6 40 speed, running back Sexton has an explosive playing style finding himself in open field a lot with his ball carrier vision and elusiveness.
Braylan Green slot receiver has an eye for the ball and scored on a 35-yard end around tailing a couple of blockers. Qb Josh Murphy was able to connect with a few of his receivers on short gain TDs to Calvin Caron and Micah Farrell. St. Michael’s defense was a part of the shutout when Zac Taylor returned a 55-yard fumble for St.Michaels only TD in the second half of the game.
Rivers and his Cardinals will have a tough next couple of weeks going into ranked 4A territory.
Next week, St. Michaels will host 4A No. 10 Jackson High and travel to Mobile next Thursday to face powerhouse No. 3 Williamson High.
Cardinals played an almost perfect game not receiving any penalties forcing 3 turnovers and kept McIntosh to just 28 rushing yards. This St. Michaels team seems to be excited to play for a former Nfl player. Defense continue to cause problems behind the line of scrimmage and offense continue to roll like a locomotive; this could be a great year for Coach Philips and his Cardinals.
