The Golden Eagles are led by head coach Dusty Trail and head into the 2021 season looking to build on a solid 2020 campaign. Bishop Carroll was one of the better teams in the Wichita City League, posting an 8-3 record on the year. This season, the team returns some great leadership at the top and is poised to make another statement among the Kansas 5A football ranks. Who are three of BCCHS’ top seniors to watch for this season? Let’s take a look.
Michael Polley – 6’1″, 170 pounds, DB
The first thing that jumps off the screen when watching Polley is his ability as a tackler. He reacts quickly and has great click-and-close fluidity, allowing him to cover a lot of ground in a short period of time. He takes smart angles, is a punishing hitter and is a sound overall tackler, proving to be one of the better wrap-up artists I’ve watched this summer. In coverage, Polley plays a lot of off coverage with cushions of around 10 yards. With that said, he watches the eyes of the quarterback and is excellent at playing the ball rather than the receiver. Polley also has return experience and should finish his high school career on a high note this season. He’s an electrifying player.
Maddox Marcotte – 6’4″, 250 pounds, LT
Simply put, Marcotte is one of the more underrated linemen in the 2022 graduating class. The left tackle has been linked to South Dakota State, and for good reason. He greets his assignment with a punch at the point of attack and maintains strong hands throughout the entirety of the rep, keeping his back squared to the ball-carrier and driving opponents away from the action. Marcotte is a good athlete who climbs into the second level of the defense with ease and is also a fluid puller in space. Staying low and maintaining good leverage is the next step for him as he finishes his career at Bishop Carroll. If he can do that and combine it with solid footwork and other fundamentals, he has a bright future ahead of him.
Matthew Holthusen – HT/WT unlisted, WR
Holthusen’s athleticism was made obvious when he posted a Bishop Carroll record 3.8-second shuttle time, but it’s further evidenced by what he shows on tape. He’s one of the Golden Eagles’ most explosive players, accelerating quickly in and out of his breaks and possessing plus top-end speed. He was oftentimes used on drag routes and proved to be very difficult for defenders to carry all the way across the field. Holthusen is an intelligent receiver who found plenty of soft spots in coverage out of his original slot alignment, and he also does a good job tracking the ball downfield. An element of his game that may go unnoticed amidst the chaos of a football game is his willingness to throw some blocks in space. Becoming a more well-rounded wideout and receiving consistent opportunities will be key for the very talented Holthusen in 2021.
