Week 1 is in the books and it did not disappoint whatsoever. Let’s take a look at winners and standouts from the Thursday and Friday night action.

<li>On Thursday night we had a top-10 battle on the coast between Ocean Springs and Clinton and what a battle it was. Double overtime thriller to kickstart the 2021 season saw <a href="https://prepredzone.com/player/bray-hubbard/">[player_tooltip player_id="108938" first="Bray" last="Hubbard"]</a> account for all 6 Greyhound TD’s as Ocean Springs won an instant classic 45-44.</li>
<li>Sticking in 6A but moving north, Brandon traveled to Oxford and had their way with Coach Cutcliffe’s Chargers for most of the night, but deep in the 2nd half Oxford did what Oxford does and mounted a rally with 24 unanswered points to knock off Coach Sam Williams Bulldogs 24-17. <a href="https://prepredzone.com/player/trip-maxwell/">[player_tooltip player_id="108934" first="Trip" last="Maxwell"]</a> had 2 TD passes splitting duties with [player_tooltip player_id="104073" first="Michael" last="Harvey"].</li>
<li>New Petal Head Coach Allen Glenn picked up a victory in his debut in Central Mississippi over Hattiesburg 16-10 in overtime. <a href="https://prepredzone.com/player/zion-edwards/">[player_tooltip player_id="104464" first="Zion" last="Edwards"]</a> was a stud defensively for Petal.</li>
<li>Defensive battle of the night was between Tupelo and Lafayette. Tupelo escapes 5-3 winners in what Coach Ty Hardin described a "boxing match". The game served as a "Who’s Who" among top defenders in the state.</li>
<li>Barn-burner of the night took place in North MS between Shannon and Pontotoc. The Warriors got the ball with 30 seconds remaining in the game and went on a drive capped with a 7 yard TD pass to <a href="https://prepredzone.com/player/nic-townsend/">[player_tooltip player_id="107038" first="Nic" last="Townsend"]</a> as time expired to beat Shannon 33-32.</li>
<li>One of the games to watch took place in the Jackson area between Madison Central and West Jones. 2023 QB <a href="https://prepredzone.com/player/vic-sutton/">[player_tooltip player_id="108930" first="Vic" last="Sutton"]</a> was solid with 3 TD passes (2 of those to <a href="https://prepredzone.com/player/blake-gunter/">[player_tooltip player_id="104365" first="Blake" last="Gunter"]</a> ) in Toby Collums Jags coaching debut to knock off the Mustangs 27-21.</li>
<li>Another defensive battle took place on the coast as Gulfport knocked off Pearl 13-12.</li>
<li>Baldwyn trailing 11-9 at the end of the 4th qtr to Kossuth got a 32 yared FG from Wade Barron as time expired to win 12-11. The Bearcats (1-0) move on to face Booneville in the annual "Skunk Bowl" next week.</li>
