For the WLV Dons, the night was particularly significant because it was the first time they had faced another school on the gridiron in nearly two years. The West Las Vegas School District opted out of the spring season due to covid concerns, so the last game or scrimmage WLV had participated in prior to Friday night was in November 2019.
Star of the night? Santa Fe RB Martell Mora Martell Mora 5'9" | 185 lbs | RB Santa Fe High | 2022 State NM . The senior offered a possible preview of the regular season by running over, through, under and above opposing defenses all night long. He’s definitely on the (short?) list of preseason candidates for Player of the Year in New Mexico.
The Demons offense functioned at a high level all night long. SFHS should be a factor in Class 6A-District 2/5 when district play begins Sept. 18 against Eldorado. Other District rivals include Albuquerque, Clovis, La Cueva, Manzano and sandia.
Three teams debuted new coaches – Belen, Capital and Grants.
