Student Sections were deck out in themes, and you could smell ribs and hamburgers from the tailgaters in the parking lots. The vibes and appetite were back, but the main dish took place between the lines on the gridiron. We saw so much good action in the first week of high school football that you could not tell that they even missed a beat. Let’s take a look at my week one standouts from across Ohio.
- Gage Sullivan Gage Sullivan 6'3" | 200 lbs | WR Kirtland | 2022 OH , Kirtland WR
The 3x State champion had a great showing in week one with multiple key blocks and tackles, along with five receptions for 132 yards and four touchdowns in a blowout victory vs. Harvey.
- Owen Wiley, Avon Lake K
Owen broke the school record with a 50-yard field goal in a week one victory over Strongsville. Wiley also had multiple touchbacks from his kickoffs.
- Bryan Hines, Lima Senior RB
Hines transferred to Lima Senior for his senior season from Lima Central Catholic. He scored on his first three touches in his opener and had two more touchdowns called back in the second half as Lima beat Bowsher 60-0.
- Adam Hyrnciw, Fremont Ross WR
Adam made the game-winning 2 point conversion on a whip route to seal the victory in a week one comeback victory over Tiffin Columbian. He finished the game with five receptions for 82 Yards, 1 TD, and the 2-Point Conversion.
- Cameron Smith Cameron Smith 6'4" | 200 lbs | WR Centerville | 2022 OH , Centerville WR
Smith had a big night on both sides of the ball for the Centerville Elks with five receptions for 130 yards in a victory over Fairfield. Cameron made a huge play late in the game when he caught the ball over three defenders in traffic and scored after the catch.
- Mason Oliver, Elmwood RB
Mason averaged 34 yards per carrying on ten touches in a big week one win over Van Buren. Oliver finished the game with video game stats, 347 rushing yards with 5 touchdowns in a 56-14 victory.
- Denim Truss, St Francis de Sales QB
Truss had to wait his turn as he was once the starter as a sophomore but was benched due to injuries. Fast forward to senior year, Truss led his team to a second-half comeback victory to beat Clyde in their home opener. Denim showcased his ability to tuck and run, and that throw the ball on a frozen rope.
- Luke Montgomery Luke Montgomery 6'4" | 295 lbs | OL Findlay | 2023 State OH , Findlay OL
Luke made his debut as the full-time Left Tackle for Findlay in week one. Many project LT to be his position at the next level, and he surely did not disappoint. Montgomery finished the game with several big pancake blocks and helped lead his team to a victory over Anthony Wayne. Luke is rated as one of the best 2023 prospects in the country.
- Travell Wright, Cleveland Heights LB
Travell had a great day from the middle backer spot making big plays in the backfield. Wright was impressive the entire game showing off his speed, quickness, and ability to make sure tackles. Wright is making a case as a top LB in the Cleveland area with his game one showcase.
