Continue ReadingThe Corning Bobcats had an impressive 2020 football season. Coach Farrell Shelton has a talented team coming back for the 2021 season. The Bobcats have talent on both sides of the ball going into the 2021 season and we are going to take a look at a few of the key players Corning will be leaning on this season. We will also give a few games that folks may want to circle on the calendar this season.
Looking first at the offensive side of the ball. The Bobcats have two options at quarterback that have the opportunity to earn some snaps this season. John Swint is a quarterback that a strong arm and can fit the ball into some tight windows. Swint makes good decisions with the football, and he does his best to avoid putting the ball in risky situations. Meanwhile, Colben Pettus has an accurate arm and will have a chance to earn some snaps this season.
The rushing attack has several talented options running the football for the Bobcats. Landon Lucas is a running back that does a little bit of everything for the Bobcats. Lucas rushed for 501 yards and two touchdowns, in 2020. Rhett Eddington, Jason Liau, Titus Haggard, and Brody Creameans will all have the chance to earn some carries this season. Plenty of depth exist for the Bobcats rushing attack.
Plenty of potential exists in the Corning wide receiver corps. The Bobcats wide receivers present tall targets for opposing defensive backs to contend with this season. Parker Davis and Roman Davis are both over 6-1 and both have playmaking potential at the wide receiver spot. Kekoa Villaluna runs extremely consistent routes and has a knack for getting open. Eli Mason will be counted on this season for his work at the tight end position. Last season, Mason caught three touchdown passes and will be looking to improve upon those numbers this season.
The offensive line has players returning at key positions. Fisher Francis returns at the center position. Francis does a good job of being extremely consistent with his snaps and getting into the opposing defensive lineman quickly. Charlie King holds down the left tackle spot extremely well. Kent Young and Blayne Ray may wind up sharing some snaps at the right tackle spot and Ethan Jordan and Carson Dowdy will see snaps at the guard spots this season.
On the defensive side of the ball, Eli Mason has played the edge position impressively. Mason racked up 16 tackles and can be disruptive to the opposing offensive line. Rhett Eddington will be counted on to continue his solid play at the linebacker spot. Eddington accounted for 27 tackles last season. The defensive side of the ball has the potential to be a scrappy group for the Bobcats this season.
2021 Prediction:
The Corning Bobcats have a chance to build off of a six-win season and a playoff run. Corning will look to keep the momentum going this season. Getting a new quarterback settled in early will be a factor on what kind of season the Bobcats will have. Look for Corning to make a playoff appearance again this season. Some key games to circle on the calendar are the Cave City and Walnut Ridge games. Both could potentially influence how the season plays out.
