As the season begins this week, there are a number of areas that continue to get plenty of the spotlight when it comes to recruiting – and there are those communities and towns that get passed over.
Let's face it – no matter how you slice it, getting any attention in Florida's Panhandle has always been a chore. If there are an elite athlete or two or three, colleges will come to see them and really nothing else.
In Pensacola, you get a few college coaches who come in to recruit the surrounding areas for a few days, but heading east is never really in the plans.
From the Chattahoochee River to the Escambia County line, the exposure is not good. In fact, as much as so many high school coaches try to get the spotlight shining on Panama City, it is truly a tough thing to accomplish, and especially during the pandemic – where travel has been limited.
As 2021 gets started, we will take a look at some of the quality prospects that this region of Florida has to offer. Many we have watched at events in the off-season.
With schools such as Bay, North Bay Haven, Arnold, Mosley, Bozeman and Rutherford, there are some quality programs that churn out some impressive talent.
At summer events, several of these standouts had the chance to showcase their skills and get themselves out there.
Among some of the seniors to keep an eye on – include North Bay Haven running back Nate Webb (5-10, 210), who we showcased along with his teammates this past spring.
Other Class of 2022 athletes to keep an eye on include Mosley receivers Chris Culver (6-3, 190) and [player_tooltip player_id="50164" first="Josiah" last="McCall"] (5-10, 190), who we profiled earlier this summer.
Also, keep an eye on Bozeman tight end Boe Taylor, who is another prospect we talked about in the off-season. He is 6-4, 235.
Some other seniors to watch are Bay offensive lineman K.T. McManigal, North Bay Haven OL Ayden Leon (6-5, 275), another prospect that turned heads at a summer camp. Athletic Sam Mudge (6-3, 205, Mosley) is versatile and can play on both sides of the ball.
On defense, there are plenty of stars as well – with Chris Jackson (DL, 6-0, 215, Mosley), Lamar Potter and Zac Edwards – 6-0, 230 (Rutherford), [player_tooltip player_id="50296" first="Jamir" last="Croom"]-Kellogg (LB, 5-11, 190, Mosley) and Cason Forhand (6-1, 175), a linebacker/receiver from Bay that received some attention in the spring.
Defensive backs Joe Carpenter (6-0, 175, Bozeman) and talented [player_tooltip player_id="120383" first="Cal" last="Corbin"] (6-0, 175) from North Bay Haven are also two prospects that many will want to watch. Both make plays! Also Rutherford's kicker/punter [player_tooltip player_id="128836" first="Jonathan" last="Walker"] has done well at several events.
JUNIOR CLASS IS STACKED
While there are some impressive football prospects in the junior class, Mosley tight end [player_tooltip player_id="128081" first="Randy" last="Pittman"] is getting plenty of the spotlight this year. The 6-foot-3, 230-pounder, who committed to attend Florida State commit, has 70 receptions for nearly 1,000 yards in his first two seasons at the high school level. He is indeed a big-time prospect.
Also, his teammate Isaac Paul, a 5-11, 170-pound cornerback, who finished with 38 tackles and an interception as a sophomore. He has also been offered by SEC school Arkansas.
Other juniors who have been on the radar screen include Bay quarterback Will Smiley (6-0, 160) and receiver Jacques Lee (6-0, 185), running back Lucas Champagne (5-8, 180, Arnold) and Mosley OL Ryan Stephenson (6-4, 290)
Top linebacker Ty'Vohn Carter (6-0, 190) and teammate – defensive back NyReun Foster – are Bay standouts that will get plenty of attention. So will Rutherford linebacker Bryson Schirmer, a 5-10, 160-pounder.
