The Legends have a brand new HC and will be replacing their star QB who just went to Morgan State. They want to be a tough and physical team and with the division they play in, we will find out really quick how ready they are.
New Coach In Town
Ben Johnson Jr is the new head coach in town. He’s not exactly new to the program as he was the offensive coordinator last year. Johnson is taking over for Coach Brevard who is now coaching at the collegiate level. Johnson is a young man himself. He’s learning and growing as a coach. He relates to his players on a personal level and they love him. They play hard for him and they know he’s got their back. He’s ready for the challenge and he’s earned it. I really hope he succeeds because North Side deserves to be competitive.
Last year was their best year in a long time and they only won 5 games. They had a 5 win season and are now filled with a ton of optimism. But here’s the thing, they should. They should be very excited about where they are heading. It was a good 5 win season, not a bad one. If Bishop Dwenger only wins 5 games this year someone is getting fired. The level of expectations shouldn’t be that different in the same division. Johnson is the coach to fix that and we find out in a few weeks.
Key Players In 2021
Brashawn Bassett has his hands full. The first-year starting QB is now the man in charge. He has huge shoes to fill week 1 and he knows it. In a recent interview, he said he’s just trying to do his job and get the ball to his playmakers. He knows his WR’s are loaded and he wants to take advantage of that. Bassett is a very good athlete in his own right. He’s 6’1″ and 185 lbs but is still agile and mobile enough to be a threat on the ground. Last year, the mobile QB was huge for the Legends. The hope is that his legs can take some of the pressure off of his shoulders, literally.
Bassett will be throwing to his star WR Tae Johnson. Johnson was very recently put in the spotlight as he was listed in the Indiana Preps 2021 Preseason All-State Top 22 Underclassmen list. He’s got great ball skills and the ability to go up and get any ball. He’s able to come down with the ball or layout for it with ease. He doesn’t let anything hit the ground either. He likes to work and he plays just as hard. The offense is to throw the ball to him and let him make a play. Bassett will be relying on Johnson big time this season.
2021 Schedule
The Legends start their season here on the 20th at 7 PM on their own field against Fort Wayne Snider. Snider is always ready to go and this year won’t be any different. The Legends get tested on day 1 of the season and we will see how resilient they really are. It doesn’t get any easier for the Legends either because they then go on the road to Bishop Dwenger then come right back to face Carroll. That is an absolute gauntlet to start their season and they know it. In week 1 the Legends will need to sink or swim and I am very excited to see how they do.
