With this particular piece, we take a look at some of the under-the-radar prospects in the home state of Minnesota that I feel are college football material when it’s all said and done. I hope you enjoy this short piece on five under-the-radar prospects to watch!
Charlie Plum Charlie Plum 6'4" | 210 lbs | TE Cretin-Derham Hall | 2022 State MN | Tight End | Cretin-Derham Hall | 2022
Plum was an appealing prospect to our Prep Redzone Minnesota Showcase, who is a well-put-together tight-end (6’4 210) prospect with solid hands. This young man can run a variety of routes but his best stuff is when he uses his solid footwork inside to create space to get to the corner. Plum is a solid prospect to go to over the middle of the field especially when you are looking for that first down as Charlie just has a knack for getting to the marker. Look for Plum to see a lot more targets for the Raiders this season as college coaches and us at Prep Redzone will want to see this young man’s high vertical level in action. It’s a shock to me that Plum doesn’t have an offer yet on the table.
Carson Strosahl Carson Strosahl 6'2" | 190 lbs | LB Walker-Hackensack-Akeley | 2022 State MN | Linebacker | Walker-Hackensack-Akeley | 2022
There is a lot to like about Strosahl’s defensive tape, as I love his attacking ability once he gets off his blocks. He also shows versatility at the linebacker position as his footwork in coverage is quite strong and he still shows that attack I love to watch when the football comes his way. Strosahl also has a high physicality level and I feel his tackling ability shows to me he’s one of the better linebackers Northern Minnesota has to offer. He is a little undersized for the linebacker position, but if this young man can add 15-20 pounds in his senior season he will even heighten more chances at the next level. Also is a high academic kid with a 3.9 GPA.
Gavin Knutson | Quarterback | White Bear Lake | 2023
As an incoming junior, Knutson shows some solid skillsets Bears fans should be excited about in the coming years. Knutson shows a quick release and when in play-action does a great job of selling the run when he leaves the pocket to throw on the run. His touch on the football is also fun to watch especially on the short-yardage plays. You can tell Knutson is a QB prospect that plays what the defense gives him, not a ton of deep balls but a focus on picking apart the seams of the defense. Look for this young man to be QB1 at White Bear Lake in the coming years as he also has solid size at 6’2 185 pounds.
Carson Thompson | Defensive Line | Rushford-Peterson | 2022
Thompson is a prospect that gets a really low pad level and uses his strength to his advantage to drive the bus to the ball carrier knees. Thompson is not the hugest defensive lineman off the edge but this young man is a bulldozer you don’t want crashing into you. He also has solid get-off skills and shows good reads when it comes to making a play on the ball. I also got to watch Thompson’s long snapping film and from what I saw he has solid accuracy on his snaps right in his punter’s chest and has a big motor on special teams too, as he’s one of the first men upfield trying to make a play on the ball. Thompson has already picked up two D3 offers as he too is a high academic prospect with a 30 ACT and 4.0 GPA as he is ranked first in his class at Rushford-Peterson.
John Evers | Defensive Back/Running Back | Plainview-Elgin-Millview | 2022
Evers does a little bit of everything for PEM on both sides of the football. I like the ground he can cover at defensive back as he does a good job at covering the edges. On offense, I like his footwork, as he’s has a solid turning ability that he uses to create space in short-yardage situations. Also has strong acceleration and when he hits full speed with contact his contact level elevates a ton. A under the radar prospect to watch from the SE part of the state this season in my eyes.
