Last Year’s Matchup
These 2 teams go at it every year. Last year, the Columbia City Eagles came away with an easy win. They won 38-0. Now, you might look at that score and wonder why we would cover a game that was a blowout last year. Schools in the area have recently reworked some conferences and these 2 schools are now playing against each other yearly. They aren’t in the same conference, but it’s a new matchup with a ton of intrigue.
Last year week 1, Churubusco didn’t feel it was ready. They were very young and had some key players out due to COVID. They knew heading into the year they would need to find their footing. A year removed, they are older and feel ready for week 1. Churubusco is typically one of the best teams in the area and I expect the game tomorrow to be much closer than last year’s.
Columbia City
Last year, the Columbia City Eagles had a decent season. They went 6-4 and fell short in the first round of the playoffs against East Noble. The Eagles offense last year was averaging over 26 PPG. Defensively, they were fine, but nothing special. They gave up just over 20 PPG and were much better at home than on the road. At home, the Eagles were 4-1 and the only loss at home was against Leo where they lost 21-7. On the road, the Eagles were 2-3 and their PPG fell by about 7 a game.
Columbia City is led by Head Coach Brett Fox. Fox is the PE teacher in Columbia City so he gets a chance to get to know his players on a different level. He also gets to see some athletic potential in the gym class. Fox first came to Columbia City back in 2014 and has been a part of their school system ever since then. Since taking over the Eagles, Fox has made Columbia City a competitive program and behind Fox, they like to play very tough at the point of attack.
Churubusco
Churubusco heads into the season anxious to put last year behind them. Churubusco’s mascot is also the Eagles. These Eagles finished the year last year going 4-4. They were much better at home where they went 3-1. The only loss last year at home? Columbia City. Their offense was middle of the road last year where they only put up 22 PPG. Defensively, they were really good. They were giving up 16 PPG. The Eagles fell short in the first round of the playoffs last year and are looking to make it past that first bump in the road.
Churubusco is led by Head Coach Paul Sade. In an interview recently, Sade talked about the struggles from the 2020 season and how they are looking to move past that. He notes that they are a very young team and last year they didn’t get to play 2 games which he felt held them back some in their development. With a year removed from the start of COVID, the Eagles are hoping that they can right the ship and head back in the right direction with Sade pulling the wagon.
Weather Report
The weather for tomorrow’s game is going to be absolutely perfect. There won’t be a cloud in the sky and by the time kickoff comes around it will be about 75 degrees out. Both teams will be looking to start their season with a win. We’ve waited quite a long time to have high school football back and we are ecstatic to be able to cover these games as we round the corner!
