Opening kickoff of the high school football regular season is just a few days away. Yesterday, we took a look at some of the quarterbacks who will be in big matchups this week. Today, we shift the focus to the top-tier running backs, who will face tough challenges this Friday. The three prospects that we will look at today have a massive opportunity to showcase their skills this week. All three will be depended heavily on by their teams, in order to take away a season-opening win.
[player_tooltip player_id="175705" first="Colton" last="Brown"], 5’10, 175 pounds, Heritage Christian, Senior
[player_tooltip player_id="175705" first="Colton" last="Brown"] currently holds the top spot in our rankings of the senior running backs. Overall in the Class of 2022, Brown is the 26th-ranked prospect, and he will be hoping for a great start to the season against Traders Point Christian on Friday. Brown is a patient running back, who is excellent at allowing his blockers to get set up. When the hole does present itself, Brown uses a terrific change of pace, bursting through, and creating a big play for Heritage Christian. He is a great north-south runner, who sees the field well, and finds the hole once it opens. Brown finishes his runs with physicality, regularly breaking tackles and falling forward.
[player_tooltip player_id="98068" first="Kaleb" last="Hicks"], 6’2, 190 pounds, Decatur Central, Senior
The speedy [player_tooltip player_id="98068" first="Kaleb" last="Hicks"], is the number 3 running back in the Class of 2022 running back rankings. Hicks is a versatile prospect, capable of hurting the defense in so many different ways. Hicks is an outstanding running back, who hits the whole hard, and he gets into the secondary. Hicks is exceptional as a receiver. He runs great routes, and he is very sure-handed. He does a wonderful job of adjusting to the football, something that not many running backs can do at a high level. Decatur Central will take on New Palestine this week, meaning that the New Palestine defense will have to be on high alert when [player_tooltip player_id="98068" first="Kaleb" last="Hicks"] touches the ball.
[player_tooltip player_id="98107" first="Travon" last="Hegler"], 5’10, 180 pounds, Mount Vernon, Senior
[player_tooltip player_id="98107" first="Travon" last="Hegler"] enters this year as the fourth-rated running back in the senior class. Hegler is a shifty running back, who can make defenders look silly. He is tremendous at changing direction on a dime, and finding more running room. Hegler does a great job of putting his foot in the ground, and getting up field. He shows that he can see the field well, as he continues to find more space to work with on each of his runs. Hegler is so difficult to tackle. He can very easily frustrate the opposing defense. Mount Vernon will need him to bring that same magic when they hit the field Friday night at Noblesville.
