With the release of the updated CA 2022 rankings, here’s an in-depth analysis of several players who are climbing rankings and recruiting boards nationwide. [caption id="attachment_165951" align="alignleft" width="245"] Photo: Twitter-[player_tooltip player_id="25273" first="Katin" last="Houser"][/caption][player_tooltip player_id="25273" first="Katin" last="Houser"], QB, St. John Bosco Houser made a big jump in the updated California 2022 rankings cracking the top 25. Checks a lot of boxes as a major D1 QB coming out of the high profile St. John Bosco program. Possesses a well-rounded skill set with his ability to make plays with both his arm and his legs. Strong natural arm talent, he shows he can spin it all over the field and hit his spots as a pocket passer or on the run. Good overall throwing mechanics and footwork in the pocket, shows he can get the ball out quick and on time with little wasted movement. Love his intangibles and confident leadership abilities. Originally committed to Boise State before flipping to Michigan State at the end of June. [player_tooltip player_id="25248" first="Mekhi" last="Fox"], WR, Pasadena Extremely gifted and talented athlete with explosive playmaking potential. Has the ability to be a home run threat every time he touches the ball using his natural speed and acceleration out of his cuts. Great versatility, he shows he can be an impact player on both sides of the ball and as a returner. He’s smooth with his movement flashing good body control and coordination as a route runner and a pass catcher. Can use his natural ability to get open and create separation but would like to see him improve technically as a route runner. After the catch he’s difficult to tackle in space with his strength, balance, and vision as a ball carrier. Committed to UCLA in late June, he has great physical tools to build as he develops. [player_tooltip player_id="141888" first="Nathan" last="Johnson"], QB, Clovis The QB out of Clovis has been steadily rising up rankings and recruiting boards over the past year and has established himself as one of the top dual-threat QB’s in the nation. He’s an elite athlete with a highly unique skillset of speed and arm talent. As one of the fastest track athletes in the state virtually no one at the high school level can catch him once he tucks it and finds a sliver of space. As a passer, he shows a live arm with a quick and compact release. The ball jumps out of his hand with good velocity and zip at all three levels and to the boundary. Extremely tough for opposing defenses to game plan for expect him to have a big senior year before departing for Utah. [player_tooltip player_id="141899" first="Braden" last="Pegan"], WR, San Juan Hills [caption id="attachment_162581" align="alignright" width="239"] Photo: Twitter-[player_tooltip player_id="141899" first="Braden" last="Pegan"][/caption]A lot to like about Pegan’s skillset with his combination of size and athleticism. Possesses ideal length at 6’4” 200 lbs. with a 78” wingspan and a strong/well-balanced build. He shows great body control and natural movement skills, especially at his size. Flashes strong and confident hands with an exceptionally large catch radius that extends way beyond his framework. Catches everything thrown his way, love the way he attacks the ball whether he is high pointing a jump ball or going down to bring in a difficult ball below the waist. He’s a creative route runner that can sell his routes and mix up his speeds to bait defenders in coverage. Collected 10 offers before committing to UCLA in June. [player_tooltip player_id="141902" first="Sam" last="Yoon"], OL, Loyola Big bodied frame at 6’5” 280 lbs. with the feet and athleticism to match. He bends well playing with good leverage and a flat back out of his stance. Great body control and mobility, he shows good lateral quickness and agility to match defenders movement and get to the second level or perimeter. Love his strength at the POA, he’s a finisher that drives his legs through contact and has a powerful hip roll. He’s technician with his fundamentals and footwork allowing him to execute different blocks with little wasted motion. Very competitive and tough style of play. Holds 12 offers to his name currently, started off receiving a handful of group of 5 and FCS offers before the PAC12 and other power 5 programs rolled in. [player_tooltip player_id="141900" first="Jason" last="Thompson"], WR, Harvard-Westlake Thompson is an explosive athlete with great top end speed and burst. He’s a plus route runner that is savvy while creating separation. Uses his acceleration and great drive phase off the LOS to eat up cushion and pressure the DB in his backpedal. He’s smooth in/out of his breaks and is able to effectively attack all three depths of the field. He’s a natural pass catcher that does a great job bringing in contested balls in traffic and across the middle. Does damage after the catch picking up big yardage using his speed and elusiveness to make defenders miss in space. Holds 11 offers from a variety D1 programs but expect the offers to keep rolling in with his big time upside and potential for the college level. He’s a dynamic athlete with elite level speed and acceleration that is lethal in the open field. Makes defenders miss with a sustained burst and quick lateral cuts using his start/stop speed. Good natural feel for the game, shows good vision and instincts as a ball carrier to read his blocks and see/create open running lanes. Has shown great year over year improvement picking up six offers before committing to SDSU in early August. Strong genes, father was an NFL RB in the early 90’s.
