With a new season just about a month from the beginning, a lot of guys have something to prove after a shortened spring season. We will be outlining a few of them and here are the second five, in no order, from the class of 2022.
When we say most to gain, we don’t mean "most to prove", these are players either looking to really break out, they may have offers, they may not, they may have P5 offers, or they may just have Ivy League offers.
Portsmouth Christian OL Toriono Combs Jr
Combs is one of the anchors of the line at Portsmouth Christian and a big part of [player_tooltip player_id="173759" first="Chase" last="Harsh"]’s success in 2020 but hasn’t gotten the love in recruiting that you would expect, that may all be about to change though as Combs has been to plenty of camps this summer.
Oscar Smith (Chesapeake) WR [player_tooltip player_id="126872" first="Amonte" last="Jones"]
Jones has been under-recruited to this point but that could all change with another season catching passes from ODU commit [player_tooltip player_id="126724" first="Ethan" last="Vasko"]. Last season saw Jones improve on his 2019 campaign, but this season, Jones is eyeing more offers along with a second state title. Currently, Jones has an offer from Maryland and is looking to add onto that as Smith tries to make three state title games in three seasons.

Kecoughtan (Hampton) QB [player_tooltip player_id="126730" first="Marvin" last="McCue"]
McCue is very underrated in a crop of good 2022 QBs. Playing on the Peninsula, McCue doesn’t get the spotlight that players on the southside of the 757 get and that’s a fact, but that doesn’t change the fact that the Kecoughtan QB can sling it and has great athleticism. With another year under Jeff Super, and [player_tooltip player_id="173751" first="Jakari" last="Mozelle"], and [player_tooltip player_id="129105" first="David" last="Anderson"] by his side, McCue is poised for a big 2022 that could also propel Kecoughtan to a place they haven’t been in a while.
McCue doesn’t have any offers yet but there has been some interest from a few Ivy League schools.

Cox (Va Beach) LB [player_tooltip player_id="127057" first="George" last="Ballance"]
Alan Faneca is the new coach at Cox, and that very well could attract more college scouts to the school, which would be great for Ballance. Ballance is a good linebacker who could thrive on the FCS level, and with the leadership of a newly-minted NFL Hall of Famer, Cox could be poised for big things, with Ballance right in the middle of the defense. With a 4.6 40-yard dash, Ballance has speed. Ballance made a visit to ODU and has interest from various other schools and an offer from Rhode Island.
Princess Anne (Va Beach) WR [player_tooltip player_id="126860" first="Javawn" last="Burden Jr"]
Burden has been getting a lot of love from schools like ODU, Liberty, UVA, Coastal Carolina, and ECU just to name a few. While Burden is quiet on Twitter, he shows up on game day and can go get the ball with the best of them. Burden will be catching balls from his third QB in three years, as Ryan High has graduated.
