Between June 9 and June 21, 2022 Rio Rancho running back Zach Vigil Zach Vigil 5'9" | 190 lbs | RB Rio Rancho | 2022 State NM completed an impressive itinerary, traveling across a half dozen states to six different camps in California, Nevada, Utah and Colorado.
In the process, he learned new skills, improved as a player and met numerous coaches from schools that have or could express an interest in recruiting him.
“I wanted to get exposed to different athletes from around the country and try to recruited by the coaches,” Vigil told Prep Redzone New Mexico. “Especially since we couldn’t do much camping last year due to covid. This trip allowed me to showcase my skills prior to my senior season. We wanted to do it last year but couldn’t, so we wanted to hit it hard this year.”
Vigil’s trek featured camp stops at the University of Redlands, UNLV, Utah State, Weber State, Colorado Mesa and Air Force. He finally returned to his home in Rio Rancho on June 22 after being gone for about two weeks.
Vigil, currently preparing to take the ACT, lauded the Air Force camp for being extremely well organized and the one camp that “stood out the most.”
The Air Force coaches have expressed interest, along with the University of San Diego and Weber State.
“The running backs coach at San Diego told me to contact him so I could schedule a visit there,” Vigil said. “Mostly, though, I introduced myself to coaches. Some of them already knew my name and had watched my film. Many said they liked my film. I was just trying to build my relationships with the coaches to where it needs to be.”
If the Air Force offers, Vigil would think seriously about spending his next four years in Colorado Springs.
“If I can get into the Academy I would be set for life,” Vigil said. “So, I don’t see why I wouldn’t go there. I’m pretty disciplined in my life, so going there wouldn’t be much of a change for me. I like the Air Force Academy a lot. I’m working on increasing my ACT score mainly for the Air Force.”
Vigil says the Air Force is showing the most interest of any school right now, and he speaks with Academy coaches just about every other day.
Vigil took a virtual tour of Weber State in the spring, so his trip to Ogden, UT allowed him to meet the Wildcat coaches face-to-face for the first time.
“I think the running backs coach at Weber liked working with me, so we’ll see where it goes from here,” Vigil said.
Vigil had an opportunity to spend about three days in Las Vegas touring the city, including the famous strip where most of the nightlife occurs.
This weekend, Vigil will attend the Northern Colorado camp in Greeley, Colo. Later, he will make the trip east for the Drake camp in Des Moines, Iowa in late July.
“Drake is showing interest,” Vigil said. “The running backs coach and I have spoken. He sends me edits. I’m excited to go there and actually meet them.”
Vigil hopes his time spent on the road at camps this summer pays off with a big season for himself and Rio Rancho. The Rams are extremely talented on both sides of the ball and go into the 2021 fall season as a legitimate Class 6A title contender.
“We know we’re getting some hype as one of the top teams in the state again this year,” Vigil said. “We’re not going to focus too hard on the hype. So, we’re going to try to prove those people right and show them what the hype is about. The key is to keep working.”
