Eight Grand Strand squads participated in St. James’ FCA-sponsored 7-on-7 Wednesday, giving the teams one final opportunity to face off against outside competition until full-padded scrimmages are allowed on August 5.
Prep Red Zone South Carolina got a close-up view of Socastee, Green Sea Floyds, North Myrtle Beach, Loris, St. James, Carolina Forest, Waccamaw and Conway.
Here were the biggest takeaways.
QUARTERBACK SCRAMBLE
During the spring, Socastee coach Ben Hampton said as many as five different players were still vying for the Braves’ QB1 spot.
If reps are tipping anyone’s hand right now, it appears as if it’s going to come down to [player_tooltip player_id="139313" first="Rocco" last="Wojcik"], Stephen Greene or Jake Marlow. Each of them bring something different to the table.
Wojcik has the leg up, perhaps, given that Hampton has three more years to develop a player who was a two-sport varsity athlete as a freshman. But Greene was the team’s primary junior varsity starter last fall and has given the staff plenty of looks, as well. Marlow, who is 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds, is considerably bigger than the other two.
Hampton was in Hawaii for a wedding this week, but one of his first priorities when he returns and fall camp begins will be to sort out his quarterback room. It could further boost a Socastee squad that made considerable strides during Hampton’s first season.
A CHANGE AT LORIS
The 2020 football season was pretty much a wash at Loris in many regards. The Lions finished third in region play, but the offense was hit and mostly miss. Second-year coach Greg Mance has clearly taken advantage of a full offseason.
Starting quarterback Jackson Graham is 6-foot-5 and has a nice touch. Middle linebacker and tight Cameron Faircloth was all over the field Wednesday.
And then there was Randall Bellamy (pictured).
After missing last season with a torn ACL, Bellamy has already been dubbed “the best athlete at Loris” by several of his coaches and stood out plenty during the early session. By our count, he had six touchdowns, including one where he split a pair of defenders.
The 5-foot-10, 165-pound slot is going to put up some numbers this year.
WELCOME BACK, CAM
North Myrtle Beach quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="91207" first="Cameron" last="Freeman"]’s future is likely tied to baseball.
His willingness to return to the gridiron gave his coach one big sigh of relief, though.
After considering hanging up his shoulder pads to concentrate on the diamond, Freeman ultimately decided to take advantage of one last year of football. The 6-foot-3, 190-pounder is a clear-cut leader, and it’s also apparent that North Myrtle Beach’s receivers respond to him extremely well, too.
Having led the Chiefs to the Class 4A title game last fall certainly didn’t hurt.
WAITING IN THE WINGS
It may be some time before his name becomes the household variety, but it’s already time to start keeping tabs on Loris freshman Jackson Huff.
The 6-foot-2, 185-pound quarterback is likely headed for the junior varsity squad this fall. However, he may have thrown some of the best passes all day. Mance, the Lions’ coach, said Huff is the real deal, and even if there isn’t a true quarterback competition this year, all bets are off next year.
