I took a quick trip up Pines Boulevard to West Broward High School to check out the Bobcats. The Pembroke Pines school is fairly new; opening up its doors in 2008. West Broward is led by head coach Brian McCartney. General Information: League: 8A District 14 Returning Starters: Offense - 8* (unofficial) Returning Starters: Defense - 5 Last Season: 2-2 Opening Game: @ Stoneman Douglas (9/10) Next Two: vs Cypress Bay (9/17), @ South Broward (9/24) Players To Watch: Jonathan Morillo - 6'2, 180 - Quarterback 2024 Jonathan Morillo spearheads a very good sophomore class for West Broward. He is a big armed prospect that just needs to develop his confidence under center. Moreover, his ball placement will continue to improve with repetitions. I expect Morillo to get taller (6'5) and be a very good quarterback. His goal should be to pass for 3000 yards. Isaiah Richardson: 6'1,170 - Safety 2022 Isaiah Richardson is one of the best players on the football team. He will fly all over the field this season and make plays sideline to sideline. Richardson has plenty of closing speed to track down defenders from the opposite side of the field. He is also very intuitive and will make plays inside the box. Richardson's coverage skills will result in pass breakups or interceptions. He is an all-around athlete that will help West Broward get off the football field. He received an offer from Toledo. Drew Dodge: 5'8,165 - Wide receiver 2023 Drew Dodge is a speedster that should find himself open in space. He will win a lot of battles off the line with his quick first step. Furthermore, his route running and agility over the middle of the field should create yards after the catch. He is a lighting rod with an edge to catch balls that others might find to be out of reach. In particular, you could see this occur down the sidelines. He is going to help the Bobcats move the chains this fall. Presley Sayavong: 6'3,215 - Linebacker 2022 Presley Sayavong should be one of the anchors in the box. He is a big kid that will wrap up and make sure tackles. Sayavong has been offered by D2 programs. Cristano Villa: 6'1,260 - Offensive lineman 2022 Crisanto Villa should help West Broward dominate the line of scrimmage this season. He is a returning starter along with 2022 Trevor Williams and 2023 Diego Graham. Villa's experience should provide leadership for a unit that often dictates wins or losses. It is worth noting that the coaching staff has plenty of experience in the trenches. Coach McCartney was a D2 offensive lineman in California. That could give players like Villa and company a healthy edge. Others To Watch: 2022 Jacob Caro: 6'2,180 - Defensive end 2023 Nicholas Vazquez: 5'9,150 - Safety 2024 Carlos Morales: 5'8,175 - Linebacker 2022 Nick Scandizzo: 6'0,200 - Tight End 2022 Nick Piton: 5'8,175 - Running back 2022 Brey Engeler: 6'0,180 - Wide receiver Overview: My initial thoughts on West Broward were they ran a high-level practice. The Bobcats got their field work in and hit the weights in regimented fashion. I think there growth in the offseason will translate onto the field this fall. These kids are all getting stronger and faster. In particular, watch the maturation of the 2022 class. I think their development could foreshadow a bright future for the program. Moreover, it feels like a family oriented team that begins with coach McCartney. The school is kind of on an "island" by South Florida standards, and I get the feeling that is just how they like it. For any South Florida Prep Redzone news or information...please contact Michael Costeines @Steins_23 on Instagram or follow him on Twitter @Mungertown_Mike23.
