Some of the nation’s best hail from the state of Georgia, and major college programs from across the country are looking to the peach state to find quality defensive backs for their class. Whether it’s a safety, or cornerback, and someone who can play both, the state is loaded with playmaking defenders in the secondary.
Here are some 2022 defensive backs on the rise who are bound for big senior seasons this fall…
Senquavious Alsobrooks – Spalding
I wasn’t the best year for a struggling Spalding team, but there was a bright spot in 2020 in do-it-all athlete Senquavious Alsobrooks. The 6-foot-0 170-pounder is an impressive return man who also knows how to lay the lumber as a hard-hitting defensive back. He’s great in coverage, shows good instincts, and is always one of the top athletes on the field. He plays with great body control, shows strong hands, and has a knack for making plays, no matter where he’s lined up. He shows good instincts as a defender and closes well on the ball carrier. against the run. He’s a strong tackler who strikes well knows how to deliver a pop when he’s making a tackle. Look for Alsobrooks to become one of the region’s best defenders this fall. He earned a recent offer from Elon and could see more coming his way shortly.
Bryce Allen Bryce Allen 5'11" | 170 lbs | DB West Forsyth | 2022 State GA – West Forsyth
It may have taken longer than expected, but Allen picked up his first D1 offer this week and it was a big one from Navy. He’s a quick, reliable defender who excels in coverage and is one of the fastest players in the state, claiming a 4.4 40-yard dash time. Allen is coming off an excellent junior season where he broke up a school-record 23 passes. He can run with any receiver he goes up against, but he also knows how to turn around and make a play on the ball instead of interfering with the receiver. Allen made 33 tackles on the season and will lead the Wolverines secondary again as a senior. Once college coaches are allowed back at high school practices, look for Allen to receive more and more interest with the opportunity to pick up more offers. He’ll be tested a lot in coverage this fall, and he should be more than up to the task.
Cam Smith – Callaway
One of the top overall defensive backs in West Georgia, Smith is a playmaker on both sides of the ball who helped Callaway win the 2A state title last year. The 6-foot-2 188-pounder is a weapon as both a receiver and a defensive back, but his ability to make game-changing plays on defense is what he does best. Smith was named a 2020 1st-Team All-Region selection last year after intercepting 5 passes last year, two of which were in the state championship game. He has a knack for making plays against the pass, but Smith is a big defender against the run as well. He knows how to tackle properly and knock the ball out when given an opportunity. Look for Smith to have another All-Region type of year as a senior this fall.
