I had a chance to catch up with Simley Head Coach Chris Mensen and discuss the players that Simley fans should be excited to see in the 2021 season. Coach Menson identified
5 players to keep an eye on during the 2021 campaign.
Josh Painter – Reciever
Painter is a 6 foot one 3 year starter for Simley. Mensen cites the senior’s route running as a difference-maker. Painter is ultra-competitive and his attitude is infectious at practice.
Landan Duval – Running Back
Duval, a 5¨11, 175-pound Senior was the Spartan´s leading rusher and TD scorer last year. He is also a member of Simley´s nationally ranked wrestling team and brings a tough-minded attitude to the squad.
Tavion McCoy – Reciever, DB
McCoy is the Spartan´s big-play guy. At 5´10” and 160 pounds, Mccoy can fly. This Senior is also expected to be tapped to play in the secondary for the Spartans.
Caleb Renslow- Quarterback
Renslow is the guy expected to get McCoy the ball. The 6¨1, 175 junior has a great attitude and an excellent football mind. Spartan fans will be excited to monitor Renslow’s development.
Matt Keifler- Tackle
Keifler is Menson’s lone returning starter on the Spartan offensive line. At 6’0” and 270 pounds, strength, experience, and leadership are expected from the (class) this fall.
Gavin Nelson Gavin Nelson 6'0" | 220 lbs | LB Simley | 2023 MN – Defensive End
Nelson is a multi-sport athlete that already has one world wrestling title under his belt. The 6 foot 1, 220 pound junior will play a pivotal role in shaping the hard-nosed Spartan defense this fall.
Overall, Coach Mensen is pleased with the work ethic and progress of his Spartans as they prepare to leave next week for team camp at UMD.
