Overview (Class 2A Preseason Ranking: #6)
One of the teams that was impacted the most by Covid, at least among the serious contenders, were the Millwood Falcons. Millwood had three regular season games cancelled, two playoff games cancelled and finished the 2020 season with a 6-2 record, which just looks odd when you consider they played all the way into the third round late in November. The Falcons were able to capture the district championship and win the most important games on their schedule, until they hit an unexpected break in the playoffs. They would beat Kellyville in a high-scoring classic. They also knocked off Jones on the road in an 8-point game. As they head into the 2021 season, they’re expected to once again contend for not only the district, but the state championship. They are the #6 team in our 2A preseason rankings. They return six starters on both sides of the ball and are ready to make another run this season. The district will be one of the tougher districts in Class 2A once again. We’ve mentioned it many times before how deep and competitive Class 2A is right now and that district might be the toughest district in the toughest class. The Falcons will have to deal with Jones again, who is also a top five team. In fact, Millwood’s overall schedule is one of the tougher ones when you combine the non-district schedule with their district. As of right now, they’ll have three games against top five teams in 4A, 3A and 2A. They’ll certainly be battle tested, as long as they get the games in! That was one of the biggest things that held them up last year and the Falcons are ready to get back to normal in 2021. And normal for the Falcons usually means contending for a gold ball.

– 2022 Defensive Back
Our fist player to watch is the only senior on this portion of the preview as the Falcons have some pretty talented younger players. However, leading the way on the defensive side of the ball is a senior in 2022 defensive back

. The Falcon playmaker will have an impact on both sides of the ball but he will be at his best and make the most impact on defense. We got a great chance to see Earl perform up close and personal at our Showcase Camp in June. He was one of just a few players who stepped up to the challenge at defensive back. He shined and showed that he could be one of the top cover corners in 2A this fall.

. The talented 2024 running back emerged late in the 2020 season and gave the Falcons an absolute spark at the running back position. Lavine simply didn’t look like a freshman last year when he was running over defenders while also showing patience for his line to open up holes for him to explode through. The 1-2 punch of Lavine and

. He’s going into his junior season and he’s going to do a little bit of everything for the Falcons. Last year, we saw Hunt line up at quarterback, running back and on defense playing all over the secondary. Hunt is at his best when he has the ball in his hands and he’s running down hill. And we mentioned with Lavine that when these two line up in the backfield and you have Hunt taking a direct snap and Lavine running along with him, it’s going to be next to impossible to contain both of these playmakers. Expect Millwood to be one of the top rushing teams in the state.

Notable
We mentioned near the top how insane the schedule was for Millwood in 2020. The Falcons were really impacted by Covid and games being cancelled left and right. Because of Covid cancellations, the Falcons didn’t play in their first two playoff rounds as their opponents would forfeit, automatically moving Millwood to the next round. While the Falcons would get to move on, it kept them off the field and they would have to go three weeks before actually playing a game and that’s where their season would end. They finished the regular season on November 6th in a win against Crossings Christian. They wouldn’t take the field again until November 27th in a game against Frederick. The Falcons would lose and it would be the first time since 2014 that Millwood was one and done in the playoffs, losing their first official playoff game. Although technically this was a third round game.
2021 Schedule/Games To Watch
Sept. 2 – AT Heritage Hall
– The gauntlet begins once again on a Thursday night in week one as Millwood will travel to face Heritage Hall. A few years ago, this series got reignited and has been a great season opener for both teams. The Falcons haven’t had the most luck in the last two seasons against the Chargers but this will kick off a busy September, in which they’ll play two top five teams in higher classes and both are on the road. After Heritage Hall, they have the annual Soul Bowl with Douglass and then a road game against Clinton, who was the 4A runner up. But it all begins here with Heritage Hall. The last time they played at Heritage Hall, they were shut out and dominated from the start.
Sept. 11 – Douglass
Sept. 17 – AT Clinton
Sept. 24 – Prague
Oct. 1 – AT Kellyville
Oct. 8 – Meeker
Oct. 14 – AT Chandler
Oct. 22 – Jones
– We mentioned before how competitive this district will be with teams like Kellyville, Meeker and Chandler being very improved. However, the top two teams and hands down favorites right now are Millwood and Jones. The Longhorns are currently #2 in our preseason rankings and the Falcons get them at home this year after beating the Longhorns on the road a year ago. This will be a clash of styles as Millwood will want to run the ball and keep Jones and their star quarterback

off the field. That’s obviously much easier said than done. The district will be competitive but this game will more than likely decide who will be the district champion.
Oct. 29 – AT Star Spencer
Nov. 5 – Crossings Christian
