Learn about some of the top returning prospects in the player capsules below as Prep Redzone highlights each district leading up to the season. Regardless of classification Iowa has some of the best talent you will find taking the field on Friday nights and 3A is looking loaded.
Charles City
Mario Hoefer, WR/DB, C/O 2022, 5’11, 170, hudl, Twitter
Hoefer brings so much value to his team as an all-purpose player in each phase of the game. He is an exceptional return man, a playmaker on offense, and a lockdown Defensive Back. Hoefer has a vast athletic skill set and really is all over the field; there aren’t many players in Iowa that never come off the field and perform as well as he does.
Ian Collins, Ath, C/O 2022, 6’0, 175, hudl, Twitter
Collins is a freak athlete with blazing speed and body control that stands out immediately on film in his sudden, twitchy movements. He is more than proficient as a passer and there is a ton of upside in getting his hands on the ball every down because of what he can do with it. Collins’ vision and awareness, on top of it all, make him so dangerous.
Tino Tamayo, OL/DL, C/O 2022, 6’2, 200, hudl, Twitter
Tamayo plays a physical, aggressive, and mobile brand of football on each side of the ball. He is a relentless blocker at Tackle who attacks through the whistle and a disciplined End who gets hands on and separates to disrupt an offense’s flow. Tamayo may give up size, especially on offense, but makes up for it with sheer violence and effort.
Hampton-Dumont-CAL
Cal Heeren, QB, C/O 2022, 5’11, 170, hudl, Twitter
Heeren is a marksman; from the pocket or on the run, to any level of the field, he can drop it right into his target’s basket. He is especially poised and collected under pressure as he scans the field making progressions and looking off coverage. Heeren’s throwing motions and release are so consistent regardless of where he’s throwing from.
Tate Schmitt, WR/LB, C/O 2022, 6’4, 175, hudl, Twitter
Schmitt is a disruptive force off the edge as an Outside Linebacker and a big, reliable target at Wide Receiver. He screams out of his stance when rushing the Quarterback, can squeeze action to him, or get flat and run plays down backside. Schmitt can make catches with defenders hanging on him and fights hard for extra yards.
Independence
Marcus Beatty Marcus Beatty 5'10" | 200 lbs | RB Independence | 2022 State IA , RB, C/O 2022, 5’10, 200, hudl, Twitter
Beatty is a powerful every down back whose patience, contact balance, and motor skills really stand out and impress. He can burst through bodies when space is limited or be nimble when daylight presents itself and elude defenders. Beatty frustrates defenders often because of his versatility; he can beat you in a number of ways.
Brady McDonald Brady McDonald 6'3" | 210 lbs | TE Independence | 2024 State IA , TE, C/O 2024, 6’2, 210, hudl, Twitter
McDonald is so athletic and put together for his age; the control he has over his movements and the explosiveness he generates through them are elite. He will without a doubt be one of the most sought after recruits in Iowa’s class of 2024. McDonald runs technical routes, makes tough receptions, and has loads of ability after the catch.
Korver Hupke Korver Hupke 6'2" | 245 lbs | OL Independence | 2023 State IA , OL/DL, C/O 2023, 6’2, 245, hudl, Twitter
Hupke plays a violent style of football on both sides of the ball at Guard and Defensive Tackle. He is very athletic when pulling, climbing, or comboing and shows off superior feet to the skill defenders he is blocking in space. Hupke is just as imposing on defense and does a great job of getting knock back and squeeze to wreck a blocking scheme.
Tono Cornell Tono Cornell 6'3" | 280 lbs | OL Independence | 2024 State IA , OL/DL, C/O 2024, 6’3, 280, hudl, Twitter
Cornell is physically mature in his size and in the way he is in control of his movements on both sides of the ball. He is a straight up mauler on offense and uses his size to cover up opponents and then lets his feet take over to steer them out of the play. Cornell is an immovable force on defense and eats up the inside gaps; he has limitless natural ability.
South Tama
Kyler Smith, WR/DB, C/O 2022, 5’8, 150, hudl, Twitter
Smith is one of the more capable and skilled Safeties in the state at operating in a deep zone or patrolling the middle of the field. His ability to stay over the top of vertical routes or pick up opponents as they enter his zone and break on passes is exceptional. Smith also excels as a Wide Receiver and uses top notch footwork to get off coverage.
Jacob Collison, LB, C/O 2022, 5’11, 195, hudl, Twitter
Collison has a ton of range from his inside alignment and defeats blocks sideline to sideline to get to the ball, which is a huge asset when an offense spreads him out and he is alone in the box. He is a secure tackler who can line up ball carriers and halt their momentum. Collison’s play recognition and quick processing make him a factor every down.
West Delaware
Wyatt Voelker Wyatt Voelker 6'0" | 210 lbs | LB West Delaware | 2022 State IA , LB/RB, C/O 2022, 6’0, 210, hudl, Twitter
Voelker is a superior athlete and it is evident that his speed and power is too much for opponents to handle. He can run through or by defenders on offense; he can cover ground like no other and finish plays with a bang on defense. Voelker needs to be schemed against when game planning and always accounted for on the field.
Kyle Cole, WR/DB, C/O 2022, 6’1, 175, hudl, Twitter
Cole has the ability to turn on the burners, kick it into an extra gear, and leave opponents in his dust when returning kicks or catching passes. He uses that same speed on defense to stick with opponents through routes and break on passes. Cole bolts all over the field and has feet that can hit a home run and break a game at any time.
