We are inching closer and closer to the start of the Iowa high school football season. Every season brings surprises, exciting plays, clutch moments, and periods of stress. But this upcoming season could arguably be one of the most exciting in Iowa’s history. With elite prospects on almost every team, the way coaches look at recruiting in the state of Iowa has been transformed.
In this article, I”ll make a ¨mock draft¨ that features 32 elite prospects. There will be some bias with positional value, but it won’t be all skill position players. After the first ten picks, I will explain my thinking, but not at the same level of depth. Just a reminder - many of these picks are based on potential. Just because one player is better right now doesn’t guarantee I would pick them in the future. Let’s dive in!
1st Pick: [player_tooltip player_id="23942" first="Xavier" last="Nwankpa"] (DB) Southeast Polk High School Twitter Hudl 6´3 190 lbs (Class of 2022) *Uncommitted
You cannot go wrong with this pick. I’m all in with Xavier because of his ability to play both ways at an insanely high level. His defensive ability is well known, but he doesn’t just perform well on that side of the ball. Xavier had 380 yards on 36 carries, averaging 10.6 yards per carry. And, while those stats are already really impressive, they could quickly increase this next season. Xavier’s frame and size increase his stock tremendously. His big-play ability on defense is undeniable, with six interceptions this season (including one pick-six). Xavier is tremendously marketable and will thrive with the NIL rules. He is my number one pick, even though an argument can be made for the second pick to be above him. I had to go with Xavier because of his positional value and explosiveness.
2nd Pick: [player_tooltip player_id="24023" first="Kadyn" last="Proctor"] (OT) Southeast Polk High School Twitter Hudl 6´6 250 lbs (Class of 2023) *Uncommitted
It’s a close second for this Southeast Polk lineman. There might not be a player in Iowa with a higher ceiling than [player_tooltip player_id="24023" first="Kadyn" last="Proctor"]. The Southeast Polk O-Lineman has received offers from almost every school that comes to mind. His physical dominance will be fun to watch this coming season, and with a massive frame (standing at 6´6 250 lbs), Kadyn could still be growing. In a Twitter comment, Kadyn indicated that he could also be playing defense this upcoming season. It will be fun to see how he performs after a solid sophomore campaign in which he helped his team to a state championship appearance. With more experience, he should be a lock for first-team all-state and the Des Moines Register elite team. KP’s potential is off the charts, and I am incredibly excited to see what he does this season. He is my number 2 pick and on many people’s list as the best prospect in Iowa.
3rd Pick: [player_tooltip player_id="23961" first="Dominic" last="Wiseman"] (DL) Davenport North High School Twitter Hudl 6´2 271 lbs (Class of 2022) *Uncommitted
One of the most underrated players in the state is my third pick. This Davenport North defensive lineman has gained more and more attention during the off-season and has earned multiple FCS offers and a PWO from Iowa. His pure motor and aggression make him the most feared lineman in the state. His production was also outstanding last season with 37.5 tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss, 33 solo tackles, and one sack. Lots of people have underrated Dominic. I believe that he deserves to be up there with the top players in the state. Keep in mind that he is also coached and trained by one of the top linemen coaches in the nation: JC Moreau.
4th Pick: [player_tooltip player_id="23946" first="Eli" last="Raridon"] (TE) Valley High School Twitter Hudl 6´6 228 lbs (Class of 2022) *Notre Dame Commit
It is undeniable: [player_tooltip player_id="23946" first="Eli" last="Raridon"] is a beast on the football field. He is going to one of the most prestigious academic universities in the nation. Not only is Notre Dame academically strong, but it produces some of the best NFL tight ends. The first thing people notice about Eli is his absurd size. Coming in at 6´6 228 lbs is not a common sight, but it’s astounding when that player can move like a wide receiver. His after-catch ability is elite, making tons of plays after the catch. Eli’s blocking is one of the most impressive parts of his game as he makes substantial running lanes for his teammates while physically dominating whatever defender he is blocking. Eli has the athleticism to beat linebackers, tight ends, and with some work-on-route running technique, he could even beat some cornerbacks. He is the only two-sport athlete in this top four and has a super high ceiling, especially with his commitment to Notre Dame. He is my fourth pick because of his extreme athleticism and his raw receiving ability. If he works on his route running, he could be a starter at Notre Dame, and any tight end that goes to Notre Dame could become an NFL prospect at some point in their career.
5th Pick: [player_tooltip player_id="23944" first="Aaron" last="Graves"] (DL) Southeast Valley High School Hudl 6´5 270 lbs (Class of 2022) *Iowa Commit
[player_tooltip player_id="23944" first="Aaron" last="Graves"] has been an elite prospect since he stepped onto the field as a freshman. His combination of size and physical dominance is second to none, and with more coaching, Aaron will be a nightmare to match up with at the Division One level. If you want to see hard hits and pure dominance, watch [player_tooltip player_id="23944" first="Aaron" last="Graves"]’ Hudl! This player was quick to commit to Iowa because of that team’s recent ability to create impressive defensive linemen. His size is highly intimidating, and his motor is one of the remarkable parts of his game. He never gives up on plays. Aaron’s potential is right up there with the top players in the state, and he is my 5th pick because of that potential and his physical size.
6th Pick: [player_tooltip player_id="105139" first="Andrew" last="DePaepe"] (DL) Pleasant Valley High School Twitter Hudl 6´5 230 lbs (Class of 2023) *Uncommitted
In Iowa, [player_tooltip player_id="105139" first="Andrew" last="DePaepe"]’s speed rush is second to none. His combination of size and speed has made him one of the most elite defensive ends in the country. Andrew has had an impressive off-season, gaining lots of attention from multiple power five schools, including Iowa, Arizona State, Iowa State, Indiana, Kansas State, Washington, and many others. Andrew and Aaron (my 5th and 6th picks) were tough for me to place. Andrew has gotten more attention, but a big reason for that is because Aaron committed so early. For now, I’ve placed Aaron above Andrew because his commitment to Iowa will turn him into a match-up nightmare, but Andrew could change my mind as the season unfolds. Andrew’s elite size and speed helped Pleasant Valley make it to the dome last season - their first appearance in a long time.
7th Pick: [player_tooltip player_id="23945" first="Gabe" last="Burkle"] (TE) Prairie High School Twitter Hudl 6´7 240 lbs (Class of 2022) *Iowa State Commit
It was with good reason that [player_tooltip player_id="23945" first="Gabe" last="Burkle"] jumped up the rankings last fall. For his size, it’s Gabe’s athleticism that stands out in a crowd. You do not see many 6’7 people move likehe does. His receiving ability is impressive, and Gabe skillfully uses his body to get open and secure the catch. His blocking ability is (no doubt) one of the best in the state at his position. In fact, with his size, it’s so good that he could even go through a position change and become an offensive lineman. Gabe’s commitment to Iowa State was a big one for Matt Campbell. I like him as the 7th pick because of his extreme size and potential as a Division One tight end.
8th Pick: [player_tooltip player_id="23947" first="Jaxon" last="Dailey"] (QB) Southeast Polk High School Twitter Hudl 6´2 205 lbs (Class of 2022) *Arkansas State Commit
It was only a matter of time until a signal-caller was selected, and the state’s best quarterback is the pick here. This Southeast Polk QB has been elite since his sophomore year and he leaped even further in his skill as a junior. Jaxon’s arm strength is by far the best in the state. He makes countless plays no other quarterback in the state has shown an ability to match. His footwork is top-notch, and he also showed an above-average scrambling ability last season. Jaxon’s stats are extremely remarkable, putting up 19 passing touchdowns, 1,859 passing yards, 13.3 yards per completion, a ridiculous 68.6 completion percentage, and 6 interceptions. Jaxon will be a stud at Arkansas State, and he is my 8th pick because of his ability to play the most crucial position in football.
9th Pick: [player_tooltip player_id="23948" first="Hunter" last="Deyo"] (DL) Lewis Central High School Twitter Hudl 6´3 270 lbs (Class of 2022) *Iowa State Commit
[player_tooltip player_id="23948" first="Hunter" last="Deyo"] shocked Iowa recently when he committed to Iowa State over many other high-level schools, including Iowa, Oregon, Arkansas, Kansas State, and Minnesota. Hunter has the best motor in the state at his position and has been one of the top prospects here in Iowa for a while now. He is a mismatch against all the competition he confronts at his level. His physicality is right up there with [player_tooltip player_id="23944" first="Aaron" last="Graves"] and [player_tooltip player_id="23961" first="Dominic" last="Wiseman"], and Hunter’s commitment to Iowa State was a massive win for that school. There is an excellent chance he succeeds there. Overall, I really like him as a prospect and believe his ceiling is pretty high.
10th Pick: [player_tooltip player_id="23949" first="Will" last="McLaughlin"] (LB) Harlan High School Twitter Hudl 6´3 220 lbs (Class of 2022) *Iowa State Commit
Another Iowa State commit, [player_tooltip player_id="23949" first="Will" last="McLaughlin"] is an explosive linebacker who delivers massive hits. When it comes to where the ball is going every play, his IQ is notable and one of his best skills. Will forces poor running lanes by opposing ball carriers due to the angles he takes - and because ball carriers are reluctant to get hit by this man. I like that he committed to Iowa State. Will gives me Mike Rose vibes, especially with his tackling skills. I am hyped to see what he does this fall because I expect him to put on a show. At 6’3 220 lbs, Will’s size is formidable. He is my 10th pick because of his ability to anchor his defense down and shut down an offense single-handedly.
Those are my top ten draft picks! The next 22 picks won’t have as much depth in the breakdown, but I will give some insight into my decision-making process for each. Let’s keep it going!
11th Pick: [player_tooltip player_id="23950" first="Jacob" last="Imming"] (LB) Sergeant Bluff-Luton High School Twitter Hudl 6´2 200 lbs (Class of 2022) *Iowa State Commit
[player_tooltip player_id="23950" first="Jacob" last="Imming"] is a versatile linebacker that mixes IQ and technique with athleticism and explosiveness. His ability as a linebacker is right up there with Will, and they are going to be an electric duo at Iowa State. Jacob is right on the edge of my top ten status.
12th Pick: [player_tooltip player_id="23943" first="Spruceton" last="Buddenhagen"] (OL) Clarke High School Twitter Hudl 6´6 270 lbs (Class of 2022) *Uncommitted
Spruceton is right up there with some of the best offensive linemen in the state. He has excellent technique and the skill to play all around the entire offensive line. Spruceton was a first-team all-state selection and earned every bit of that accomplishment. I expect some Division One offers to roll in soon for this talented player.
13th Pick: [player_tooltip player_id="104081" first="JJ" last="Kohl"] (QB) Ankeny High School Twitter Hudl 6´6 225 lbs (Class of 2023) *Uncommitted
JJ has had one heck of an off-season. The Ankeny signal-caller has shot up every type of ranking available this off-season, and it’s not a surprise. With a massive frame and an absolute cannon for an arm, the sky is the limit for [player_tooltip player_id="104081" first="JJ" last="Kohl"]!
14th Pick: [player_tooltip player_id="23953" first="Kale" last="Krogh"] (OL) Ballard High School Hudl 6´6 260 lbs (Class of 2022) *Iowa Commit
This player is a perfect combination of size and fundamentals. [player_tooltip player_id="23953" first="Kale" last="Krogh"] is a monster on the line, and I would not be surprised if he’s way higher on other people’s lists! He is an elite talent, able to move all over the place on the line. I love that he committed to Iowa and know that they will turn him into a freak of nature.
15th Pick: [player_tooltip player_id="99196" first="Brayden" last="Loftin"] (TE) Lewis Central High School Twitter Hudl 6´5 210 lbs (Class of 2022) *Kansas State Commit
There is a very real argument to be had that [player_tooltip player_id="99196" first="Brayden" last="Loftin"] is the best receiving tight end in the state. He is a great route runner who can easily pick apart opposing linebackers. Brayden has excellent ball skills, as well, and can catch 50/50 balls with ease. Blocking is there, too. He will definitely get some playing time at Kansas State.
16th Pick: [player_tooltip player_id="100041" first="Benjamin" last="Reiland"] (DL) Waukee Northwest High School Twitter Hudl 6´4 230 lbs (Class of 2022) *Uncommitted
[player_tooltip player_id="100041" first="Benjamin" last="Reiland"] is a beast. He is crazy explosive, and his combination of size and athleticism cause a lot of problems for offensive linemen. He has gotten a lot of recruiting attention. Surprisingly it has gone under the radar. Last year he was putting together a great season but then had a serious injury in the playoffs against Ankeny. Benjamin is one of the top defensive linemen in the state, without a doubt.
17th Pick: [player_tooltip player_id="23954" first="Tynan" last="Numkena"] (WR) Bettendorf High School Twitter Hudl 6´2 205 lbs (Class of 2022) *Uncommitted
The top wide receiver in the state comes in at number 17. Tynan has a great frame, and if he improves on explosiveness, he will shoot up this draft board. Tynan is a great route runner and keeps cornerbacks guessing. He has multiple Division One interests and could end up scoring an offer this fall. He is excellent in the open field, and Bettendorf uses him in a gadget-type way that is fun to watch.
18th Pick: [player_tooltip player_id="147446" first="Eddie" last="Burgess"] (ATH) Montezuma High School Twitter Hudl 6´4 230 lbs (Class of 2022) *Uncommitted
Eddie is the definition of versatile. He exceeds at quarterback but could easily play a different position in college. Quarterback-wise he has a cannon and delivers the ball right in the basket more often than not. He is sneaky-quick as well and can break out on some designed runs. Eddie is one of the most interesting prospects in Iowa.
19th Pick: [player_tooltip player_id="100879" first="Trey" last="Porter"] (DB) Ankeny Centennial High School Twitter Hudl 6´2 190 lbs (Class of 2022) *Northern Illinois Commit
[player_tooltip player_id="100879" first="Trey" last="Porter"] is an uber-athletic defensive back that has one of the most perfect frames for a corner. His size allows him to jam opposing receivers on the line, and it also prevents most receivers from being able to catch 50/50 balls on him. He is a phenomenal track athlete who has crazy explosive speed that allows for good recovery speed.
19th Pick: [player_tooltip player_id="100841" first="Wyatt" last="Hatcher"] (LB) Lewis Central High School Twitter Hudl 6´3 220 lbs (Class of 2022) *Uncommitted
[player_tooltip player_id="100841" first="Wyatt" last="Hatcher"] is easily one of the best tacklers in the state. He is always where the ball is and seems to make a play almost every time. He does a great job shedding blocks and disrupting running lanes and can give opposing coordinators a headache. Lewis Central has always produced great talent, and [player_tooltip player_id="100841" first="Wyatt" last="Hatcher"] continues that tradition.
20th Pick: [player_tooltip player_id="23967" first="Colin" last="Kadolph"] (HB) Ankeny High School Twitter Hudl 6´0 190 lbs (Class of 2022) *Uncommitted
This may be a bit of a surprise to most people, but I genuinely believe that [player_tooltip player_id="23967" first="Colin" last="Kadolph"] is the 20th pick here. The stuff he was doing before Arland Bruce came back from a transfer issue was remarkable. It seemed Colin was putting up crazy stats every game! He ended up with 840 rushing yards, 15 rushing touchdowns, and 9.0 yards per carry. His explosiveness is absurd. He quickly breaks away from the second line of defense. Colin is also extremely shifty and can make tacklers miss and get extra yards. He is versatile and a significant weapon in the backfield.
21st Pick: [player_tooltip player_id="100048" first="Kyson" last="Van Vugt"] (DL) Western Christian High School Twitter Hudl 6´7 230 lbs (Class of 2022) *Uncommitted
Yep, you read that right: 6´7 230 lbs. Kyson has gained a lot of Division One attention because of his size, and he’s sure to fill out even more in college. He has great explosiveness off the line and uses it to beat opposing linemen with ease. He towers above almost every lineman in the state and is a nightmare to match up against. He holds offers to Eastern Michigan and South Dakota, but a number of Division One schools are in the mix.
22nd Pick: Titus Christansen (HB) Southeast Polk High School Twitter Hudl 5´10 175 lbs (Class of 2022) *Uncommitted
Yet another Southeast Polk athlete makes this draft. Titus exploded onto the scene last year with a fantastic fall. He was versatile and could run, pass, block - whatever you needed him to do. His balance is right up there with [player_tooltip player_id="23967" first="Colin" last="Kadolph"]’s, and it’s honestly almost neck and neck between the two. Titus will be a beast this upcoming season, and I am excited to see what he does.
23rd Pick: [player_tooltip player_id="104098" first="Jaxon" last="Smolik"] (QB) Dowling Catholic High School Twitter Hudl 6´2 185 lbs (Class of 2023) *Uncommitted
Get ready for the [player_tooltip player_id="104098" first="Jaxon" last="Smolik"] show this upcoming season. It’s rare for Dowling to have a returning quarterback with a lot of experience, and [player_tooltip player_id="104098" first="Jaxon" last="Smolik"] got that right away as a sophomore. He is one of the best in the state when it comes to pre-snap reads. He has a solid deep ball that he often places right on stride and is also great at realizing when he needs to hit the check down.
24th Pick: [player_tooltip player_id="99933" first="Luke" last="Vonderhaar"] (OL) Pleasant Valley High School Twitter Hudl 6´4 255 lbs (Class of 2022) *Uncommitted
Luke had an outstanding season, making 3rd team all-state and 1st team all-district. He is excellent at finishing his blocks and opens up holes for his teammates. He is one of the big reasons Pleasant Valley was so good at running the football this season. He has picked up a lot of Division One interest, and I expect him to get an offer sometime soon.
25th Pick: [player_tooltip player_id="104750" first="Kai" last="Black"] (WR) Urbandale High School Twitter Hudl 6´4 205 lbs (Class of 2023) *Uncommitted
[player_tooltip player_id="104750" first="Kai" last="Black"] is right up there with having one of the best offseasons in the state. He gained offers from Iowa State, Wisconsin, and Iowa. He is massive at 6´4 205 lbs and has a knack for catching 50/50 balls. He has one of the highest ceilings in the state and (similar to Brady McCullough) could make the position switch to tight end.
26th Pick: [player_tooltip player_id="23955" first="Ryan" last="Crandall"] (DB) Ankeny High School Twitter Hudl 6´3 200 lbs (Class of 2022) *Uncommitted
[player_tooltip player_id="23955" first="Ryan" last="Crandall"] is in the conversation when it comes to being the best athlete in the state. The triple varsity sport athlete is an amazing tackler who rarely allows ball carriers and receivers to get past him. He has been a choice ballhawk with eight career interceptions and has been a big reason why Ankeny’s defense has been elite for the past two years.
27th Pick: [player_tooltip player_id="24030" first="Jamison" last="Patton"] (ATH) Des Moines Roosevelt High School Twitter Hudl 6´2 190 lbs (Class of 2023) *Uncommitted
[player_tooltip player_id="24030" first="Jamison" last="Patton"] could easily be up in the top 15, but I have to see more than two games of film to put him up there. His talent is undeniable. Jamison is going to be good this upcoming season. He is uber-athletic and can play quarterback, wide receiver, running back, defensive back, safety, you name it. He has a cannon for an arm and can throw probably 40-50 yards. He is also dangerously mobile, allowing him to create plays with his feet. He is a raw safety prospect but can easily learn and become an elite safety. It’s really up to him what position he wants to play in college. As of now, he has an offer to play safety at Iowa State.
28th Pick: [player_tooltip player_id="99932" first="Brandon" last="Vander Sluis"] (OL) Le Mars High School Twitter Hudl 6´3 280 lbs (Class of 2022) *Uncommitted
Brandon is a monster on the line and uses pure physical force to move his opponents out of the way. He is good in both the pass and run game and has gained FCS attention this summer. He already has above-average technique, and you could see Brandon move up this list in time.
29th Pick: [player_tooltip player_id="23951" first="Corey" last="Phillips"] (TE) Ames High School Twitter Hudl 6´5 250 lbs (Class of 2022) *Uncommitted
[player_tooltip player_id="23951" first="Corey" last="Phillips"] is a big dude. Standing at 6´5 250 lbs, he’s a nightmare to guard. He has good ball skills and can win 50/50 matchups against linebackers and corners. Corey uses his body well enough to shield defenders from the ball, making him the only guy who can make a play on the ball. Corey is a significant redzone threat and was able to put up great numbers last season. He has offers to Kansas, UCF, and UNI.
30th Pick: [player_tooltip player_id="100043" first="Jaylen" last="Pettus-McMullen"] (DL) Dowling Catholic High School Twitter Hudl 6´2 220 lbs (Class of 2022) *Uncommitted
In my opinion, one of the most underrated players in the state is [player_tooltip player_id="100043" first="Jaylen" last="Pettus-McMullen"]. His explosiveness on the line outmatches almost every lineman he goes up against. He is a beast on the line and caused lots of quarterbacks problems last year. He is also great at disrupting running lanes and filling gaps to create negative yardage plays.
31st Pick: [player_tooltip player_id="105189" first="Watts" last="McBride"] (DB) Cedar Rapids Washington High School Twitter Hudl 6´0 175 lbs (Class of 2023) *Uncommitted
For my 31st pick, I’ve got to go with the sophomore tackling machine [player_tooltip player_id="105189" first="Watts" last="McBride"]. He is a violent tackler and can force fumbles and deliver huge hits. He instantly became the best player on his team this year, despite his age. He recently picked up an offer from Nebraska, which isn’t the only one he will get. He is a great playmaker and can line up anywhere in coverage.
32nd Pick: Brady McCullough (WR) Ankeny High School 6’4 210 lbs
Brady McCullough is going to be a stud this upcoming season. He is huge standing at 6’4 210 lbs and uses that size beautifully to shield opposing defenders from the ball and making it so he is the only one that can make a play on the ball. His frame also allows him to play tight end where I could see him playing in college.
That’s a wrap on my first round choices. Here are a few of my honorable mentions: [player_tooltip player_id="100843" first="Tamden" last="Webb-Tate"], Rusty VanWetzinga, [player_tooltip player_id="23960" first="Clayton" last="Muszynski"], [player_tooltip player_id="23986" first="Cade" last="Borud"], [player_tooltip player_id="23980" first="Ryley" last="Barnett"], [player_tooltip player_id="23962" first="Easton" last="Harms"], [player_tooltip player_id="152536" first="Alex" last="Mota"], [player_tooltip player_id="104715" first="Aidan" last="Hall"], [player_tooltip player_id="23978" first="Easton" last="Eledge"], [player_tooltip player_id="105140" first="David" last="Borchers"], [player_tooltip player_id="104716" first="Javion" last="Jondle"], [player_tooltip player_id="101038" first="Andrew" last="Harris"], [player_tooltip player_id="23998" first="Jack" last="Rutz"], [player_tooltip player_id="23969" first="Joshua" last="Jenkins"], [player_tooltip player_id="104099" first="Peyton" last="Rottinghaus"], [player_tooltip player_id="104079" first="Tyler" last="Smith"], [player_tooltip player_id="24007" first="Dawson" last="Forgy"], [player_tooltip player_id="23973" first="Logan" last="Green"], [player_tooltip player_id="104798" first="Joseph" last="Kingston"], and [player_tooltip player_id="104749" first="Jalyn" last="Thompson"].
Let me know if you would like to see a second round of this draft that would include many honorable mentions. Feel free to DM me with other viewpoints as well!
