All around the state each year, it seems as if they are more and more elite defenders coming up, especially in the secondary with this 2023 class. We checked out some of the talented 2023 defensive backs, and with summer coming to a close fast, it’s hard to not get excited to watch these guys play!
[player_tooltip player_id="125520" first="Tony" last="Mitchell"]- |6’2 180| |CB| Thompson
With a great build, hands, and breakaway speed, it is clear why Mitchell is not only considered one of the best overall prospects in the state but the country as well. In coverage, Mitchell is a quarterback’s nightmare, throwing in his direction is asking for either an incompletion or turnover. If Mitchell continues to progress at the rate he has throughout his first two seasons, he is going to become even more of a problem for offenses at the next level.
[player_tooltip player_id="131885" first="Jay" last="Avery"]- |6’0 160| |S| Hoover High School
Avery possesses great speed and instincts in the secondary. While he plays very well in coverage with his ability to intercept and break up passes, Avery is a hybrid in the way he shines in run support, being able to track and tackle everyone with ease. While already receiving offers from UAB and Charlotte, it shouldn’t be a surprise to see Avery pick up more this fall.
Dale Miller- |5’10 162| |CB| Hoover High School
Another member of Hoover High’s secondary, Dale Miller, has been turning heads amongst Power 5 teams for a while now with offers from Auburn, Arkansas, Mississippi State, and more. With his speed, ability to adjust, skill in man coverage, and aggressive playstyle, Miller has continually wreaked havoc in the passing game.
[player_tooltip player_id="131887" first="Maliki" last="Haynes"]- |6’3 175| |S| Escambia High School
Haynes has incredible size and length for his position, which proves to be a great advantage for him on film. Using his size, he is able to deliver punishing hits towards the offense, and his long arms allow him to break up passes with ease. Haynes has also proven to have really good hands and ball skills, as he is able to make some impressive interceptions. Although not listing any current offers, Haynes’s junior season will definitely change that.
[player_tooltip player_id="125525" first="Dallas" last="Young"]- |6’1 180| |CB| Gardendale High School
Young might be one of the best man-to-man corners in the state, he continually exhausts wide receivers with his coverage and aggressive play off of the line of scrimmage. It is no shock to see why SEC schools have been lining up to provide offers, as he not only possesses great size and athleticism, but also a great instinctual feel for what those he is lining up against are going to do.
