Having a top-tier defensive backfield is a luxury that all coaches aspire to have. Defensive backs that shadow wide recievers amd force turnovers, can make offense completely one-dimensional. The Class of 2022 offers an abundance of prospects who are capable of rendering the opponent’s passing game useless. Today, we will break down some of the defensive backs that are currently flying under-the-radar. All three of the players that we will discuss today are ready for big things this year.
[player_tooltip player_id="98040" first="Jahmad" last="Harmon"], 5’11, 175 pounds, Lawrence Central
[player_tooltip player_id="98040" first="Jahmad" last="Harmon"] is a versatile cornerback, who finds many different ways to contribute to the defense, and the team as a whole. Harmon has the ability to defend in the slot. He has the speed to cover slot receivers stride-for-stride. Harmon is very good at the line-of-scrimmage. He gets his hands on the receiver, and he disrupts the route. Harmon is solid in press coverage. He also has great recovery skills. [player_tooltip player_id="98040" first="Jahmad" last="Harmon"] never gives up on the play. He is an outstanding tackler. Harmon is also a factor on special teams. He can be very useful coming off the edge on the field goal/extra point block unit.
[player_tooltip player_id="139764" first="Steven" last="Stephany"], 5’10, 185 pounds, Jefferson
[player_tooltip player_id="139764" first="Steven" last="Stephany"] has the perfect frame and build for a high-level defensive back. At 5’10, 185 pounds, Stephany will be able to handle a wide-array of coverage assignments. Stephany will be able to match most receivers all the way through the route. I believe that he could do well either on the outside or covering in the slot. [player_tooltip player_id="139764" first="Steven" last="Stephany"] is a prospect that I think has tremendous up side.
[player_tooltip player_id="98098" first="Ta’Shy" last="Stewart"], 5’11, 175 pounds, Kokomo
[player_tooltip player_id="98098" first="Ta’Shy" last="Stewart"] is a very instinctive safety that I believe will climb the state rankings this season. Stewart demonstartes a high football IQ. He knows the defense very well, and he knows what he needs to do and where he needs to be, on each play. Stewart has tremendous ball skills. He is somebody that can come up with a takeaway that gives the team a spark. Stewart is not afraid to come down and stop the run. [player_tooltip player_id="98098" first="Ta’Shy" last="Stewart"] is somebody that can also be very dangerous on special teams. He is a very effective kicoff returner, capable of setting the offense up in great field position.
