In the wake of a flurry of offers, visits and commitments that come with the open period of recruitment, it’s easy to overlook some players that aren’t making headlines. Here, we’ll take a look at five quarterbacks flying under the radar this summer.
As we look at under-the-radar players, we’re always looking for guys that haven’t gotten the recognition their abilities deserved. Last week we looked at the quarterbacks. This week, we’ll look at the guys at the receivers.
[player_tooltip player_id="28679" first="Landyn" last="Backey"], 5’11 175, 2022- Weddington
Backey has tremendous athletic ability and has one of the more unique receiver skillsets in the state. At the National Preps Combine, he put on a show, broad jumping 10 feet, 4 inches and running a 4.4-second 40. Backey excels with the ball in his hands, whether on screens, designed handoffs, or on short routes created by Weddington’s RPO-heavy offense. I fully expect a few D1 schools to step up after watching him work out this summer.
[player_tooltip player_id="141272" first="Connor" last="Powe"], 6’3 175, 2022- Laney
Powe moves really well for his size and impressed me with his polished route running at the National Preps Combine. He plays his high school ball down on the coast in an area that has traditionally had its best players watch their recruiting unfold a bit slower than players in other areas. Powe has the size, speed and technique to contribute immediately in college.
[player_tooltip player_id="45007" first="McCallum" last="Wright"], 6’2 180, 2023- Broughton
Wright is a guy that has flown somewhat under the radar despite bursting onto the scene as a freshman. He was productive as a freshman at Ravenscroft and then played well as a sophomore at Broughton, albeit in limited action. A two-sport athlete, Wright has fantastic leaping ability and is excellent with the ball in his hands.
[player_tooltip player_id="131682" first="Levi" last="Matthews"], 6’5 180, 2022- Sanderson
Matthews has elite size for the position and even offers Sanderson a lot on defense. At 6-foot-5 with ball skills though, it’s difficult to leave him out of the offensive game plan. Matthews isn’t just a big-bodied receiver as he offers a deep threat as well, averaging nearly 17 yards a catch. Matthews recently earned his first offer from Dartmouth.
[player_tooltip player_id="50901" first="Luke" last="Bailey"], 5’11 195, 2023- Providence
Bailey has the build of a running back and the route running ability and speed of a receiver. He was one of the best route runners I saw in person this summer and is a mature player for his age, able to beat both man and zone coverage. A strong player, he prefers to run through tackles than around them and excels as a blocker. He’s a guy that could see his recruitment take off in the coming months.
