Continue ReadingIt is almost that time once again, and we can’t wait for those Friday night lights! We are getting started on our top 5 rankings within each conference at different positions on the gridiron. First, we will be taking a look at the top quarterbacks in the 2A region 3. These smaller schools can be overlooked at times, and we are here to showcase some of the talent. Let’s dive in.
- #13 Cason Campbell – 5’11 180 lbs. Sr. McCrory High School-
Taking the top spot is the senior quarterback out of McCrory High. Cason shows great poise in the pocket, he looks very in control and has a great understanding of the game. He makes his progressions and delivers the ball with good footwork, leading to accurate throws. One of the more impressive parts of his game, is being able to escape the pocket, extend the play and deliver the ball on the run. He has also shown the ability to change his arm angle in order to fit the ball through defenders. Cason has good mobility and displayed some strength when running. Campbell has some good talent alongside him this year, as we will later illustrate. The Jaguars will be relying on Cason to lead the charge towards a conference title and deep push into the 2A playoffs.
2. #3 AJ Beale AJ Beale 5'11" | 185 lbs | WR Cross County | 2022 State AR – 6’1 185lbs. Sr. Cross County High School-
AJ Beale AJ Beale 5'11" | 185 lbs | WR Cross County | 2022 State AR may be the most athletic player in the conference and maybe 2A class. Last year, he was used all over the field, mostly at wide receiver and at running back on the offensive side of the ball. The Thunderbirds only return two starters on the offensive side of the ball. Luckily, for them, AJ can do it all. Look for him to extend plays as he is agile and gets up to speed very easily. Beale does not like to go down and fights for extra yards. He possesses great football knowledge and will be able to make the transition to quarterback. Cross County High will need a big year out of him to contend within the conference.
3. #6 Carter Smith- 5’11 180lbs. Jr. East Poinsett County High School
EPC’s all-conference QB Preston Rains has graduated and in steps Carter Smith. Carter showed flashes of good quarterback play when Rains was out last season. He is very capable of achieving all-conference as a junior, as he has one of the more talented teams in the conference surrounding him. Smith showed good discipline in his short stint at QB, as he completed 62% of his passes. He really impresses when he maneuvers the blocking lanes and hits the seams swiftly. Look for Carter to top this list next year. It will be interesting to see if he can lead the talented Warriors to another conference title.
4. #3 Brylan Honeycutt- 5’8 160lbs. Jr. Marked Tree High School
Honeycutt will be taking over the quarterback duties this year as the Indians move on from their shortened season. Brylan gets the ball out of his hand quickly and on point. He is sound in the pocket and will take a hit when delivering the ball. He shows good vision as runner, quickly hits open holes, puts his head down and drives. He has good potential as a QB, but has a lot to prove when it comes to throwing down the field and making his progressions.
5. #12 Tyrome Hurst- 6’0 150lbs. Jr. Earle High School
Earle will be trying to bounce back from one of their worst seasons in recent memory. One thing they can count on going into the season, is the return of their QB1. Tyrome has shown the ability to have big games with his legs and arm. He will be the most experienced junior quarterback in the conference. With his slender frame he can be slippery and extend plays with his athleticism. At times, he looks a bit frantic in the pocket. He will need to work on his pocket presence and pass accuracy. He is certainly one of their more athletic players and the Bulldogs will heavily rely on him this year.
