Playing varsity ball anywhere as a freshman is hard, but playing on a Mississippi varsity squad is even more difficult. Mississippi routinely has huge classes of upper classmen who have had plenty of time to grow and develop in the program. The freshman that play are usually special players at a young age. As we developed our initial 2024 watchlist, we discovered some offensive players that made a name for themselves early on.
Mendenhall offensive tackle [player_tooltip player_id="139599" first="Fred" last="Dampeer"] started every game in 4A last season. This guy has some borderline elite potential. As a rising sophomore, Dampeer stands at 6’4" 225 with some impressive athletic testing as well. He claims a 4.90 40 yard dash, and on film, there’s a good chance that that is accurate. There’s even a video out there of him dunking a basketball with no running start. Dampeer has all the athleticism in the world to be a special tackle prospect in the 2024 class. Watch for him to have a big time season.
A recent transfer to Madison Central, offensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id="139634" first="Joe" last="Koury"] flashed as a tackle last season. Koury stands at 6’1" 270 with plenty of time and room left to grow. This guy has some natural athleticism to him and can bend in and out of his stance with ease. He fires off the ball and gets hands on a defender quickly. What stands out most about Koury is the tenacity he plays with. He shows no quit until the whistle echoes and puts defenders in the dirt. Really like the upside he brings to the table. Exciting new addition to an already talented Madison Central offense.
Over at Pass Christian, ATH Terry Patton Jr. could end up as one of the most dynamic players in the class. This guy is legit. Last season, he was the starting running back for his team and made some outrageous plays. Patton shows the ability to bounce of contact well and recover to keep going at an early age. He has great long speed and quick feet in the backfield. In the open field, Patton uses a variety of moves to make people miss in space and trip over their own feet. He also can catch out of the backfield. Sky is the limit for this guy, really looking forward to watching him.
WR [player_tooltip player_id="139635" first="Daniel" last="Hill"] of Meridian High is a big and strong outside receiver. Hill stands at 6’1" 220 but also has the speed to blow by corners. He has a smooth release at the line of scrimmage and shows the ability to stack defensive backs when he runs routes. Hill tracks the ball well downfield and can go up and grab anything nearby. He’s currently more of a possession type receiver, but his skills in the open field have plenty of time to develop. With his size and strength, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Hill ended up playing the modern day tight end role in the near future.
Up at Tupelo High, WR [player_tooltip player_id="139851" first="JQ" last="Witherspoon"] was used in the slot last season due to his dynamic playmaking ability. At 5’9" 160, Witherspoon has plenty of time left to grow and develop. His borderline elite speed is what makes him special. This is the kind of guy that can take a jet sweep or screen all the way to the house from anywhere on the field. In the open field, he runs fluidly and has good hips to change direction. Witherspoon shows the ability to make people miss in space as well. Really like his potential and will be excited to watch him play a full varsity season this year.
We’re excited to cover this special class and will have plenty more content coming out soon! A lot of gifted athletes pop up throughout the year in Mississippi, and we’re gonna find them all.
