When players and coaches talk about head coach Sam Brown, they speak of a coach who has the best interest of his student/athletes in mind.
His Fort Myers Dunbar football team has been creeping up with the “big boys” in the state of Florida, and heading into the summer, this will be a program to keep your eye on.
With Brown and his assistant coaches teaching and promoting these prospects year-round, the Tigers showed last season – even during a pandemic – that they are one of the most talented programs in southwest Florida.
Completing a 9-3 season, ending with a 40-0 loss to eventual 6A state champion Miami Central, Dunbar made sure that they learned from each setback. Central, North Fort Myers (17-0) and South Fort Myers (13-12) not only stood in the way of a perfect season, but it served as a reminder that even losses can turn things around.
Not that this program forgot about the wins against East Lee (58-0), Ida Baker (35-19), Fort Myers (20-14), Riverdale (40-0) and Lehigh in the regular season – and playoff victories against Belen Jesuit (38-0), Island Coast (39-27) and previously unbeaten Naples Palmetto Ridge (12-9), but it was the adversity of losing goes a long way in motivating the team.
With a win over Estero in the spring, the Tigers have been laser focused on the upcoming season.
With a gifted 2022 Class, the Tigers are optimistic – with prospects such as Jonathon Cole (OT, 6-4, 300), Bobby Dennis (WR/CB, 5-9, 170), Jeramiah Livingston (SS/OLB, 6-1, 190), Demetrie Morgan (Edge, 6-4, 211), [player_tooltip player_id="108645" first="Daveon" last="Palmer"] (QB, 6-2, 180), Avian Rice (FS, 6-1, 200) and cornerback Nick Thomas (5-10, 175).
UNDERCLASSMEN ARE READY TO GO
In addition to a quality senior class, who has the experience of playing in big games, the Tigers also feature an impressive group of juniors (2023) – led by gifted [player_tooltip player_id="128040" first="Shawn" last="Russ"] (CB, 6-4, 185), who has been on the radar for two years now – and colleges are watching and enjoying.
In addition, keep your eye on [player_tooltip player_id="118762" first="Jordan" last="Church"] (OT, 6-5, 300) and fast-rising linebacker Tavaris Irons (6-2, 190).
The Class of 2024 (sophomores) will also Twaski Abrams (WR, 5-11, 166), Tavaris Irons (OL/TE, 6-2, 190), Ja'vieane Stevens (Athlete, 5-10, 195) and impressive defensive tackle Adrian Stone (6-4, 265).
