As Florida International University head football coach Butch Davis addressed nearly 400 campers on Tuesday night, the NCAA “Dark Period” was over.
Nearly 14 months had passed since college coaches could shake hands and talk face-to-face with athletes across the country.
With schools such as Nebraska, Indiana, St. Thomas University, University of Florida, Florida Memorial, ASA Miami, Purdue, Keiser University and Ave Maria on hand to watch some of the top athletes in the state, a large weight was finally lifted from college coaches and athletes who desperately needed this opening day – after being trapped by the pandemic.
FIU was indeed one of many places that opened its doors nationwide to football talent in every class.
With the 2022 prospects truly needing this exposure, with time continuing to tick away, several made their way to the Medley campus.
They came from Orlando, Tampa, Viera, Daytona Beach, Jacksonville and every city and community in a south Florida region that is always loaded with athletes – and certainly a focal point for not only FIU, but other schools as well.
Standout such as Viera Class of 2022 receiver [player_tooltip player_id="50190" first="Donovan" last="Giles"] was on hand with so many other elite prospects.
Miramar safety Darius Thomas was someone that every college watched. This 6-3, 195-pounder was truly a head-turner all night.
Miami Christopher Columbus quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="50165" first="Fernando" last="Mendoza"] was also looking solid during the workouts.
Speaking about head-turners, Fort Lauderdale Dillard is a program that is poised to make a run in 7A – even with powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas in the same district.
Winners of 18 of the past 19 games, the Panthers had 2022 cornerback sensation [player_tooltip player_id="50295" first="D’Mon" last="Brinson"] and fast-rising linebacker Christian Murphy were followed by everyone.
Monsignor Pace talented freshman quarterback Adrian Posse was there and he was impressive.
First year program Miami International Academy 2022 running back Yann Ulrich and fellow senior Mazio Randall, a gifted lineman, were also impressive.
Other prospects who came out included Tampa Bay Tech 2022 DE Keyon Clark and Tampa Catholic, which started the summer tour by sending seven football players to Miami. Tampa Catholic linebacker Corey Lucius was solid.
In the end, we are back on the football fields and college coaches can be a part of the process once again.
