The 2023 class is already full of players with major D1 offers including possible 5-star safety Caleb Downs Caleb Downs 5'11" | 180 lbs | DB Mill Creek | 2023 State GA , CB Ethan Nation Ethan Nation 6'0" | 170 lbs | DB Roswell | 2023 State GA , CB Michael Daugherty Michael Daugherty 6'0" | 175 lbs | DB Grayson | 2023 State GA , and many more.
There are a few more 2023 defensive backs in the state who are bound for big years this year, and these particular players could start to see their stock take off sooner than later as we enter spring practice.
Aaron Gates Aaron Gates 6'0" | 180 lbs | ATH Trinity | 2023 State GA – Trinity Christian Academy
Maybe the hottest defensive back prospect in the state right now, Gates is a true playmaking athlete at 6-foot-0 180-pounds. He already holds some major D1 offers, but he continues to add more and more to his already impressing offer list by the day. In the last week, Gates has picked up offers from Michigan, Vanderbilt, and Florida. After helping lead his team to the 1A Private state title game, it’s clear Gates has starting to climb higher and higher on college boards across the country. Gates run routes like receiver and has good size due to his length frame. Gates was a playmaker on offense as he totaled over 400 receiving yards, but he’ll likely play defensive back at the next level. The West Georgia defensive back reeled in 5 interceptions last year, making him one of the bigger defensive playmakers in the area. He’s a tremendous athlete who will likely play even more on offense this fall.
Javion Clark – Jones County
Looking for an under the radar defensive back in Middle Georgia? Clark is your guy. At 6-foot-2 175-pounds, Clark is a feirce hitting who is coming off a big sophomore season. He’s a rangy safety who can really come down and set the tone against the run. He’s a powerful hitter and leaves a mark when he hits the defenders. He’s also reliable when the ball is in the air as he tracks it down well and doesn’t let defenders get behind him on a consistent basis. His stock has been rising for a few weeks now and it’s led to recent offers from Georgia Tech and Jacksonville State. He’s taken some visits this month and could see more schools pull the trigger on an offer sooner than later.
Shelton Lewis – Stockbridge
Another standout from Middle Georgia, the versatile defensive back has big-time ball skills and knows how to bait a QB into throwing his way. The 5-foot-11 170-pounder does a great job of roaming the back end and can close really well on a receiver when the ball is in the air. He has great speed and knows how to sink his hips and run with receivers. He controls the middle of the field in coverage and has enough length to make plays against bigger, longer receivers. He has great safety instincts against the pass. Lewis can also be physical and knows how to separate receivers from the ball. He can be an intimidating defender in the middle of the field and knows how to lay a pop on the ball carrier when he needs too. He’s young, but has a lot of potential to have a breakout junior season this fall.
