As June begins its college camps galore throughout the country, many high school football players aim to get bigger, faster, stronger, and make a name for themselves. I was fortunate to catch up with one of the top players in the state of Illinois, [player_tooltip player_id="65707" first="Keegan" last="Glover"], over lunch and ask him about his recruitment process, training, season goals, and more.
Q: How does it feel to make the 4A All-State Team?
Mr. Glover: It feels good being recognized as one of the best at my position in my class throughout Illinois; it’s surreal while also fulfilling knowing I worked hard all offseason during the pandemic. I kept my focus and never strayed.
Q: How has your offseason gone so far? Do you have or been to any camps/ showcases?
Mr. Glover: Has been quick-paced so far. Making four showcases/camps since ending our season. I have been working with Steve Garcia, former QB at South Carolina, for my QB fundamentals. I also have three college camps in the coming weeks while also traveling to two more showcase camps.
Q: What are the offseason goals that you can and can’t control?
Mr. Glover: Some of the things I can control are putting on good weight (6’0 170), I would like to get to 180 by season, and when my freshmen year of college comes along (6’2/6’3 195-200) is feasible. I can’t control my height, but my father is 6’4, so I feel good about where I will get.
Also, I want to fine-tune all the small things. I know the small stuff will make me leaps and bounds better. I want to help make the team better all-around develop the future of Benton Football for when I graduate.
Q: Tell me about a typical week of training?
Mr. Glover: Four days a week, I hit the weight room the other three days; I am doing yoga. My mornings start at 6:00 am with my trainer on lift days, then 8 am for yoga days. Then, of course, I always get something done in the afternoon, whether a 2nd workout or some actual fieldwork tossing the ball or footwork. So I keep myself busy, constantly grinding to get better.
Q: How is your academics?
Mr. Glover: Entering my senior year, I have a 4.8 GPA; it can be tricky sometimes with all the training, camps, showcases, practices, and games. I love it all, though, and wouldn’t trade it for anything.
Q: What colleges have expressed interest?
Mr. Glover: Multiple small schools, no real big schools, which stems from my size; mainly recruiters want to see how much bigger I can get, which I understand entirely.
As far as schools that have reached out, Greenville, Elmhurst, Mckendree, Sioux Falls, Concordia, Dartmouth, Murray State
Q: What do you want to tell the recruiters that are overlooking you?
Mr. Glover: I’m an all-around athlete that can do anything you ask at the quarterback position. I lead by example by working hard on and off the field. I am the QB they can trust to make the right decision.
Q: Expectations this Fall for you and your Benton Rangers?
Mr. Glover: We expect nothing less than an SIRR Conference Title and make a deep playoff run. We have quite a few seniors ready to make a name for themselves this season. The team as a whole is hungry and focused. As for myself, I want to get as many eyes on me as possible to give myself as many options as I can get to make the right decision for me for my college decision.
Keegan is an exceptional talent with all the tools to play the quarterback position quite well. You don’t have to be 6’4 215 to play the part, and he is proof of it as so many others are around the country each year. Continually makes camp appearances where facing three-star to five-star recruits. He shows off his athleticism with his superb release, accuracy, and arm strength to make any throw on the field, demonstrating remarkable decision-making skills.
Keegan has a busy June ahead, preparing him for July and the seven on 7’s with his team against some of the larger schools in Southern Illinois in 5A Marion and 6A Mt. Vernon, as well as some other tournaments the Rangers have setup. I can’t express this enough to all scouts, coaches, and recruiters that this young man is the real deal without a doubt.
