There were multiple football programs represented including the hosts Fairmont, Martin County West, Lake Crystal Wellcome-Memorial, Blue Earth Area, and North Union (Iowa). I have broken the articles into three parts (part one-part three) and will be spreading the love on Pre Redzone Minnesota from today thru early next week. Let’s take a look at the first five prospects that caught my eye in Fairmont.
Sawyer Tordsen, DL/OL, Fairmont (2023) | Twitter
In my first glimpse of Tordsen, he showed off solid footwork and an excellent frame checking in at 6’6 just under 260 pounds. For his size, I came away really impressed with his vertical jump as he was out jumping kids at the combine that was significantly smaller than him by 40-60 pounds. He also was a workhorse in the weight room putting up the most reps (8) of the few linemen that juggled the 225-pound benchpress.
I got the chance to watch Tordsen’s tape and found a prospect that has some next-level skill. Defensively he has a sound vision from what I could see in clogging the line the making sure the ball carrier is the last of the defenders that they meet. He gets thru the line with good speed and I think if he can improve slightly on his bend and draw more film in the fall season, he has a good chance of playing college football not only because of his 6’6 260 frame but his skill set he has to go with it.
Zach Jorgensen Zach Jorgensen 6'3" | 180 lbs | QB Fairmont | 2022 State MN , QB, Fairmont (2022) | Twitter
Jorgensen was the only quarterback in the group so he definitely got his money’s worth when it came to reps and definitely caught some attention from us and the college coaches in attendance. Meeting Jorgensen, you see a QB that is well put together with ideal QB size for the next level. He’s got strong mobility to extend plays and make the plays he wants to make. I also saw Jorgensen had a solid touch on the football and could zip in the WR’s hands with a tight window. Zach also showed excellent character in my conversation with him.
I said it in a quick evaluation before I left Fairmont, Jorgensen is a very precise thrower, and within the first two clips of his film, you see just that. Zach’s arm strength is really good and he doesn’t lose much of it when he throws on the run either. His mix of throws is solid even though he favors the deep ball, he can make the slant route for 10 yards work over the middle. Jorgensen I feel could develop slightly better-throwing mechanics but he sure as heck would make a solid Northern Sun QB which is the bulk of where he is getting interest from right now.
Gavin Rodning Gavin Rodning 6'0" | 180 lbs | LB Fairmont | 2022 State MN , RB/LB, Fairmont (2022) | Twitter
Rodning really impressed me on the bench press, his pro-agility (4.46), and his broad jump. He plays on both sides of the ball as an undersized RB/LB but really cranked it up a notch when it came to his testing numbers.
When I got to Rodning’s tape my first two words were: holy cow. This kid is the definition of a flyer as a run-stuffer and one that can catch guys from anywhere due to his outstanding burst off the line. Rodning is one that is a sneaky linebacker that creeps up to the line ready to make a play. We have Rodning in our top 65 prospects in the Class of 2022 for a great reason as his flying ability is just something I want to see at the next level. I may have hit the jackpot with these first three prospects on that note from Fairmont.
Luke Schonborn, DB, Blue Earth Area (2022) | Twitter
Schonborn put up a top three best time at pro agility at 4.32 and also was a top three in the vertical jump at 32 inches. Schonborn showed in drills just how well he can move on the field as well, where he made some fantastic cuts on routes. He also showed off some solid footwork that had a great twitch, but he knew exactly what he was doing with them with no overkill.
Schonborn showed on film that he is more under the radar than I thought with those numbers. He is one that attacks the ball well as a crashing safety, a hustler that can get downfield quick on returns, and a high physicality level when it comes to blocking anywhere you need him to be. Schonborn is also a fearless blocking fullback too that is not afraid to get his hands on a bigger defensive lineman when he’s on offense for Blue Earth Area.
Brock Lutterman Brock Lutterman 5'10" | 160 lbs | DB Fairmont | 2023 MN , WR/DB, Fairmont (2023) Twitter
Lutterman came in smaller in height and weight than what I saw on film a few months back, but really rocked the pro agility where he ran a 4.23 after posting just a pinch over 5 seconds in the 40-yard dash. I did not get to watch Lutterman much in 1on1s as I was running all over to all the drills, but big props to this young man for getting to the State Golf Tournament a few days ago!
When I watched a new section of Lutterman’s film I really saw how his strong pro agility time matched up with him as a DB. Lutterman can turn the corner quickly and flip his hips in the opposite direction to go the other direction. His active footwork works really well on screen plays, as his stopping ability looked to be stronger than most DBs he went up against as he was able to create separation easily. Lutterman does well on the press at DB and is a DB prospect that has the endurance to cover sideline to sideline.
The Fairmont Combine part two standouts will be out on Prep Redzone Minnesota tomorrow morning!
