Not only did they make it all the way to the championship game, but they finished the season off with a strong win against Fitzgerald High School to claim the 2A title. In this game, the final score was 22-17, which was a perfect representation of a hard fought season that resulted in a 12-1 overall record. Next season, as many people probably expect, the Cavaliers will likely be returning for another strong season. Below, we have listed a few of their top returning players to look out for.
Kevin Alfaro- WR / DB
Even though Alfaro is a bit of a smaller prospect, he still has the ability to open up the game on the offensive side of the ball with his ability to be a reliable target for the QB. He not only tracks the ball well with his eyes, but he is good at turning the corner and gaining good yards with the ball in his hands. This helps to balance the offense in various ways, and the way he is able to pair this with his burst helps him to be able to be a game changing player for his team. Alfaro can also be seen to be very versatile due to his defensive play. On defense, not only does he make good tackles, but he plays with good leverage and bend. This helps him to consistently position himself well to make tackles, or to come away with the ball as well.
Jervis Parks- FS
Having a player like Parks on the defensive side of the ball is a huge factor for any defense, especially due to his burst and ability to take good angles and make plays in space, including tackles in pursuit. His quick ability, and fluid movement skills help him to flip his hips well, and to be able to turn and run cleanly. This allows him to play well in both zone, and man coverage. When the ball is in the air, he plays it well, and is able to use his ball skills and body control to high point the ball and make interceptions or pass break ups. Paired with this, his twitch, and ability to change direction well out of his breaks also helps him to maneuver the field well, helping to create strong defensive play.
Cam Smith- FS
At 6’3, 185 pounds, Smith is a long DB who plays with good leverage and burst. This allows him to make good tackles on ball carriers, and to also play with good range as well. Smith plays well with discipline, and has an eye for understanding the play at hand, which helps him to adjust in spacial situations and to put himself in a good place to make plays on the ball. He also plays with lack of fear when approaching contact, and he does a good job of allowing his burst and explosive ability to make him effective on the defensive side of the ball. In the 2021 season, look for him to be one of the staples of the team’s defense.
Carlos Billingslea- WR
Next season, we have no doubt that Billingslea will continue to be a play maker for the Cavaliers, as his big play ability is too undeniable to not get him the ball. Not only does he catch the ball well with clean and strong hands, but he does a good job of turning, and getting up the field. He uses his speed, burst, and explosive ability to gain positive yards, and to place his offense in good position to continue to march down the field. When running routes, even though he is a bit raw, he has decent footwork, and separation ability, which allows him to stack defenders well and to make for easy throws for his QB. All in all, he is a pure athlete, and we are exciting to see how he performs next season, especially because we feel that his talent and ability will age like fine wine.
