Last year Iowa generated college football prospects like [player_tooltip player_id="23828" first="Jase" last="Bauer"], [player_tooltip player_id="23831" first="Marcus" last="Morgan"], and [player_tooltip player_id="23854" first="Aidan" last="Dunne"]. This year the state continues the process with a fresh crop of star seniors which includes players like [player_tooltip player_id="23947" first="Jaxon" last="Dailey"], [player_tooltip player_id="23998" first="Jack" last="Rutz"] and [player_tooltip player_id="98700" first="Barrett" last="Lindmark"]. Let's take a look at the top ten quarterbacks in our 2022 Iowa rankings.
[player_tooltip player_id="23947" first="Jaxon" last="Dailey"] (Southeast Polk) Twitter Hudl (Prep Redzone Position Rank: 1) 6´2” 205 lbs Committed to Arkansas State
[player_tooltip player_id="23947" first="Jaxon" last="Dailey"] is ranked as the top quarterback in the 2022 class and that ranking is a no brainer. Jaxon put up 27 total touchdowns (the most in the state in his class), with former Ames quarterback Tamin Lipsey coming in next with 21. In addition, Jaxon led in passing yards, all-purpose yards, passing touchdowns, and (last but not least) QBR. Jaxon has exceptional footwork outside of the pocket and can make throws on the run at a high level of accuracy. Jaxon doesn’t stare at a single receiver - he looks at all of his reads - but he is also comfortable in the pocket and makes quality throws to his first read. Arkansas State secured a future starting quarterback in [player_tooltip player_id="23947" first="Jaxon" last="Dailey"].
[player_tooltip player_id="147446" first="Eddie" last="Burgess"] (Montezuma) Twitter Hudl (Prep Redzone Position Rank: 2) 6´4” 230 lbs. Uncommitted
His size causes Eddie to immediately stand out in the crowd. It is unusual to find high school level quarterbacks at 6´4” 230 lbs., which makes me think that Eddie could play multiple positions at the college level. He has tremendous arm strength and routinely hits receivers in stride. In addition, Eddie put up an insane 89 touchdowns last season - the next closest was 62 touchdowns - and 59 of those were passing touchdowns. Granted, he plays 8-Man, so the level of defense is lower than an 11-Man full defense. However, Eddie has many upsides, which is why he slots in at the #2 quarterbacks in our 2022 rankings.
[player_tooltip player_id="23998" first="Jack" last="Rutz"] (Johnston) Twitter Hudl (Prep Redzone Position Rank: 3) 6´2” 200 lbs. Uncommitted
[player_tooltip player_id="23998" first="Jack" last="Rutz"] is one of the most interesting prospects in the state. The Johnston quarterback is rated as a 4.5-star kicker by Kohl's Kicking and started his high school career as a kicker only. Then Johnston gave him the keys to the offense last season, and he was impressive. The result? [player_tooltip player_id="23998" first="Jack" last="Rutz"] is a dual-threat quarterback who can destroy you with his legs and his arm. He can fit the ball through tight windows and does a good job of setting his feet to make the throw rather than making the throw from an off-balance stance, which many high school quarterbacks have a habit of doing. [player_tooltip player_id="23998" first="Jack" last="Rutz"] fits perfectly in with the new spread offense that offensive coordinators favor nowadays because of his dual-threat ability and his arm. I like him at #3 right now. The only thing holding him back from moving up the list is his decision-making - and this could show growth in the coming season.
[player_tooltip player_id="23964" first="Luke" last="Longval"] (Sioux City East) Twitter Hudl (Prep Redzone Position Rank: 4) 6´2” 190 lbs. Uncommitted
[player_tooltip player_id="23964" first="Luke" last="Longval"] had an outstanding junior season, leading Sioux City East to a top seed in their district while putting up impressive numbers. Luke had 17 passing touchdowns, 1,458 passing yards, a 58.3 completion percentage, and 14.9 yards per completion. He has a great arm and is not afraid to throw the deep ball. He is skilled at recognizing safeties and what coverage the defense is in - yet is being slept on in the recruiting trail. I believe he should get more attention. As a team, Sioux City East struggled against Ankeny Centennial in the playoffs, getting bounced out during the first round. This is one thing that puts a negative look on Luke. Overall, Luke has a very fluid release, and if he performs in those big games during his senior year, he will for sure be a college quarterback.
[player_tooltip player_id="147459" first="Logan" last="Knaack"] (Grundy Center) Twitter Hudl (Prep Redzone Position Rank: 5) 6´0” 170 lbs. Uncommitted
[player_tooltip player_id="147459" first="Logan" last="Knaack"] is the definition of a playmaker. He can explode for huge runs and is electric in the open field. He places second in the category of most touchdowns in Class A football, with a total of 35 touchdowns. I can easily see [player_tooltip player_id="147459" first="Logan" last="Knaack"] take on a different position in college because of his pure athleticism. He played some safety, as well, and totaled four interceptions. Not only did Logan play on offense and defense - but he also returned punts. Overall, Logan is an electric playmaker, and he will be on a mission this season to get a ring.
[player_tooltip player_id="98644" first="Carson" last="Toebe"] (Clear Lake) Twitter Hudl (Prep Redzone Position Rank: 6) 6´3 190 lbs Uncommitted
[player_tooltip player_id="98644" first="Carson" last="Toebe"] is another playmaker. He is excellent on his feet and stays cool and collected in the pocket. He has great touch, leading receivers into his throws rather than forcing the wide receiver to stop his route and make a play on the ball. He also has a cannon and can throw lasers when he needs to fit through a tight window. Carson is a tremendous basketball player, as well, and could play in college in both sports.
[player_tooltip player_id="147447" first="Conor" last="Gruver"] (Easton Valley) Twitter Hudl (Prep Redzone Position Rank: 7) 6´1 165 lbs Uncommitted
What immediately jumps out to me about this player is his touch when throwing. Conor does a great job putting the ball right where it needs to be and hits receivers in stride. He is excellent in the pocket, making multiple plays under pressure that many high school quarterbacks would find difficult to execute. He also has a fluid throwing motion that delivers the ball quickly but accurately. I like where he is at #7, but he could jump up this list during the fall season.
[player_tooltip player_id="98642" first="Jack" last="Gilligan"] (Dubuque Senior) Twitter Hudl (Prep Redzone Position Rank: 8) 6´1” 190 lbs. Uncommitted
[player_tooltip player_id="98642" first="Jack" last="Gilligan"] is a gunslinger with a strong arm. He makes many throws that other high school quarterbacks cannot. He is also an electric scrambler and has breakaway speed that can set up for huge plays when his reads are not in place. Jack stays calm in the pocket, not running into sacks or allowing coverage sacks. Without a doubt, a little decision-making work could land him a position as a college quarterback.
[player_tooltip player_id="98700" first="Barrett" last="Lindmark"] (Pleasant Valley) Twitter Hudl (Prep Redzone Position Rank: 9) 5´11” 185 lbs. Uncommitted
Barrett had a tremendous season last year. He led Pleasant Valley to UNI’s Dome for the first time in a very long time. He is great in the option game and is driven to get every yard he can on every play. He has a fluid release that delivers the ball accurately to his receivers. He analyzes coverages at a high level. Because of his ability to run, Barrett can make gambling safeties and corners pay by throwing over their heads on designed deep balls. Barrett has the tools to be a college quarterback and can fit in a vast majority of offenses.
[player_tooltip player_id="98641" first="Zayvier" last="Arguello"] (Newton) Hudl (Prep Redzone Position Rank: 10) 6´2” 205 lbs. Uncommitted
Zayvier is a great playmaker who excels in the option game. He has an innate sense of where holes will open up. Zayvier also has a cannon and makes insane throws that very few quarterbacks in this top ten could complete. His size (6´2” and 205 lbs.) could lead him to play a position other than quarterback, and his dual-threat ability is impressive. This combination makes him a top ten quarterback in Iowa. He also hits receivers in stride, which allows for more yardage on big plays.
That wraps up the top ten! There is a ton of talent in Iowa, and the quarterback position is proof. We have explosive athletes who have the tools in hand to be starting quarterbacks at the college level.
