I watched a lot of good football games this spring but didn’t get to see a ton of freshmen. Which is why I was excited to see Prep Redzone’s <a href="https://prepredzone.com/california/rankings/2024-rankings/">updated class of 2024 rankings</a>.
The rankings were released recently and here are my thoughts on the few players from the Long Beach area who made the rankings and the watch list.
Here is <a href="https://prepredzone.com/2021/06/2024-rankings-breakdown-long-beach-edition-part-1/">part one</a> of my breakdown of the Long Beach players.
[player_tooltip player_id="147724" first="Jordan" last="Malauulu"] is a receiver from St. John Bosco who didn’t get any varsity playing time this spring in Bosco’s crowded receiver corps. He was the best receiver on his lower level team and his speed jumps out at you on film. He makes plays as a kick returner, and as a defensive back. Malauulu is a solid route runner and the lower level coaches loved running him on fade routes in zone coverage and safeties were too slow to catch him which resulted in a few touchdowns. He has an offer from Pittsburgh.

Another lower level standout for Bosco who made the rankings is running back [player_tooltip player_id="147723" first="Khalil" last="Warren"]. He is already close to 200 pounds and was a great power running back on the lower levels. He is quick to get through the line and has breakaway speed when he gets going, but I expect him to be a power back for the varsity team this fall.

One of the non Bosco players left on the list is Millikan linebacker [player_tooltip player_id="115442" first="Riley" last="Tuggle"]. Tuggle has a high-motor and is primarily an outside backer for the Rams. He is 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds and isn’t afraid to mix it up with offensive linemen while defending the run and plays sideline to sideline. He has an offer from Nevada.
It’s unclear what position [player_tooltip player_id="115464" first="Chauncey" last="Sylvester"] is when you watch Bosco’s lower level film, but it is clear that he’s an outstanding defensive player. He covers guys in the slot in man coverage and plays zone like a corner sometimes. He has really good closing speed to the ball and has good timing as a pass defender. His versatility makes him a huge asset for Bosco’s defensive coaching staff and I’m sure they will figure out how to get him on the field this fall.

Millikan defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id="147740" first="Ethaniah" last="Steffany"] got some playing time at the varsity level this past spring and held his own. He is an interior defensive lineman who can get into the backfield and is a solid tackler. He will benefit from a real offseason in the weight room and I expect a nice sophomore season but for him to become a national recruit during his junior season. Central Michigan has offered him and he will gain some more this winter.
