Here in the month of June we're updating all of our prospect rankings as the 2021 season gets closer and closer. For the 2022 class, we went from a Top 100 to a Top 150 as this class continues to get deeper and deeper. The margin between the ranked players is very close and this class has a chance to be fairly deep from top to bottom. The guys in the Top 10 are some of the best in recent memory, especially in that Top 5. You can check out the Top 150 Right Here. Throughout the week, we'll be adding some analysis on the players that have stood out in the 2022 class with positional breakdowns, newcomers and even prospects on the border of being ranked this time around. Go back and check out our updated rankings for the 2023 and 2024 classes. For now, we take a look at five athlete prospects who stood out to us in the last ranking update.
[player_tooltip player_id="38673" first="Cade" last="McConnell"] - Choctaw (Ranked #12 Overall)
We kick off the prospect breakdown with a top ten caliber prospect that's just outside of the top ten. That is a perfect example of just how loaded this 2022 class is when it comes to the top of the rankings. McConnell received a Top 10 grade during the recent evaluations but clearly there were more than just ten prospects that received the same grade. McConnell is a part of an absolutely loaded offensive line at Choctaw that has the chance to be the best unit in the state. McConnell is the best of the group and has been widely considered one of the top offensive line prospects for a few years now. In fact, it's been Deer Creek's [player_tooltip player_id="38666" first="Jacob" last="Sexton"] and McConnell at 1 and 2 for over two years now when it comes to the offensive line position. McConnell is an absolute mauler on the line of scrimmage and you can tell that the physicality is what he enjoys the most. McConnell is headed south as a TCU commit.
[player_tooltip player_id="101404" first="Camden" last="Billy"] - Thomas (Ranked #57 Overall)
Thomas loses one big man on the line of scrimmage after the graduation of All American [player_tooltip player_id="38503" first="Aden" last="Kelley"] but they have another top lineman returning in [player_tooltip player_id="101404" first="Camden" last="Billy"]. The first thing that stood out to us last season when we saw Thomas in person, expecting to be blown away by Kelley, was how close Billy was in comparison. On the offensive line, they would line up right next to one another and it gave Thomas a significant advantage. We're looking forward to seeing how the Terriers and more specifically how Billy will look now that he has to step into a bigger role. He will more than likely move to offensive tackle with Kelley graduating but his natural spot will be on the interior of the line at the next level. So when you go back and watch his junior tape, you get a good feel for what he'll be at the next level and you can't help but be impressed. He can move incredibly well for his size and does a great job utilizing his hands to neutralize an opponent.
[player_tooltip player_id="38683" first="Cash" last="Hudson"] - Bishop Kelley (Ranked #56 Overall)
Continuing on the interior of the offensive line, we go to Bishop Kelley's [player_tooltip player_id="38683" first="Cash" last="Hudson"], who actually comes in one spot ahead of Thomas' Billy. Hudson has had the attention of his coaches for a few years now. Early on in the 2020 season, we asked some of their coaches about the potential of Hudson and they simply smiled in response. They would also go on to talk about how he could be one of their better prospects in recent memory. Hudson's number one trait is his versatility. He's lined up all over the line of scrimmage from tackle to guard and center. His natural fit at the next level will be more on the interior as he is one of the smaller prospects in this breakdown. However, he still has the strength to deal with those bigger defensive tackles that he'll be lined up against. Hudson is a promising prospect that will bring a high game IQ to wherever he ends up. The IQ is obvious with how much he's asked to do with Bishop Kelley along the offensive line.
[player_tooltip player_id="38666" first="Jacob" last="Sexton"] - Deer Creek (Ranked #4 Overall)
Deer Creek offensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id="38666" first="Jacob" last="Sexton"] has been considered a top five overall prospect since his freshman year of high school. He's spent some time at the top spot but has always been a top five guy and considered an elite prospect from the start. Sexton is still the top guy at the position and has held on to the top spot from the beginning. When you watch him on tape or in person, it's pretty easy to see why he's held on to the top spot. Sexton is an absolute technician with his hands and has all the tools you want from an elite offensive tackle. We were also able to check out Sexton in action this offseason during various camps and when he was going against elite competition, Sexton didn't miss a step and was always on top of his game. Sexton is starting to get closer to a commitment as he's taken visits to some of his top schools. Alabama, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M are all in the mix to land one of the top prospects in Oklahoma's senior class.
[player_tooltip player_id="38675" first="Will" last="Thomas"] - Union (Ranked #19 Overall)
In every class, we end up finding a few prospects that are being criminally under recruited and because of that, we feel the need to bring it up as much as possible. In the 2022 class, and specifically with the offensive line position, one prospect that certainly deserves more respect is Union's [player_tooltip player_id="38675" first="Will" last="Thomas"]. We got a chance to see him in person and again with his junior film and we were blown away by both. In person, Thomas is a towering presence and knows how to use his size to simply overpower opposing defenders. Thomas might have been slowed down this offseason by a surgery that limited what he could do as far as camps and different outings. However, Thomas is an absolute force along the line of scrimmage and watching him and the Union rushing attack is going to be fun to watch this fall. We mentioned earlier that Choctaw might have the best offensive line group. Well Union is going to be knocking on the door for that title and Thomas is going to trying to overtake McConnell as the second best OL in the class.
