It’s been six weeks since the abbreviated spring high school football season ended, but the offseason has been buzzing with activity as teams begin to prepare for the - hopefully – normal 10-game regular season fall schedule. Here are some newsworthy items from this past week:
Cibola QB Ahead of Schedule: Cibola quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="137861" first="Aden" last="Chavez"], our No. 1 prospect for the 2023 class, suffered a broken collarbone in the Cougars’ second (and final) spring game against Eldorado, undergoing surgery a few days later.
Chavez had big plans for the summer as far as attending camps, and those plans looked doomed. However, Chavez has healed rapidly and released a short video on social media May 5 showing him tossing a football.
Chavez told Prep Redzone New Mexico that he plans to compete at the Elite 11 Regional in Los Angeles on June 6, two days after participating in a camp at Texas Tech in Lubbock. Additional camps on June 9 (QB Collective), June 27 (Las Vegas, Nev.), July 10-11 (Atlanta) and July 30 (Colorado State) follow his trip to the Elite 11 Regional.
“I’m ahead of schedule,” Chavez told Prep Redzone New Mexico. “I’m doing physical therapy twice a week and working with my trainer.”
Wysong Honored: Cleveland wide receiver [player_tooltip player_id="26158" first="Luke" last="Wysong"], arguably the fastest senior player in the state, was named the 2021 New Mexico Gatorade Player of the Year. In 3 games for the Storm this spring, Wysong had 15 receptions for 457 yards and six touchdowns, 12 rushes for 66 yards and 1 TD and 561 all-purpose yards.
Wysong, of course, concluded his prep career with a flourish by catching five touchdowns against Las Cruces on April 3 at UNM Stadium in Albuquerque. Starting this fall, Wysong will be wearing the Lobos uniform on the same field. He signed with UNM in December.
Los Lunas Hires New Coach: Greg Hennington, most recently the offensive coordinator at Eldorado, has been named the new head coach at Los Lunas High School. Hennington was the head coach at Belen from 2016-2018 and led the Eagles to a 27-9 record over those three seasons before joining Eldorado. He succeeds Jeremy Maupin, who was recently named the new head coach at Artesia. Los Lunas won all three of its games this spring and advanced to the Class 5A state championship games against Roswell in 2018 and 2019.
“Los Lunas Schools is extremely excited and confident of Coach Henington’s ability to lead a program that has been consistently successful," athletic director Wilson Holland said in a statement.
RECRUITING NEWS: 2021 Grants wide receiver Bryan Hernandez committed to JUCO Gavilan College in Gilroy, CA. . .2022 Valencia OL [player_tooltip player_id="135310" first="Jonathon" last="Croker"] was offered by the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, WA.
