In this article we take a look at some of the rising stars at QB in Iowa High School Football Class 5A. This article includes Class of 2022 and Class of 2023.
[player_tooltip player_id="98655" first="Dionte" last="Fliss"] Prairie QB Class of 2022 Hudl
[player_tooltip player_id="98655" first="Dionte" last="Fliss"] had a great junior season at QB for Prairie putting up 7 Touchdowns, 908 Passing Yards, and a NFL QBR of 95.13. Dionte has a phenomenal arm and throws his receivers open countless times. One of the biggest parts of his game that I love is his decision making. He threw only one interception during his 2020 season and it was his first year starting at QB. He will have great weapons returning and I wouldn’t be surprised if he blows up as a prospect during his senior season.
[player_tooltip player_id="100952" first="Mason" last="Morrow"] W.D.M Valley QB Class of 2022 Hudl
[player_tooltip player_id="100952" first="Mason" last="Morrow"] didn’t have a normal season. He hadn’t started for Valley until Week 4 against Ankeny. In just five games he cemented himself as the starting QB at Valley and led them to the substate final, which was sadly cancelled due to COVID-19. Mason has great pocket awareness and is very hard to tackle inside the pocket. Watching his Hudl, he makes some amazing plays where he escapes multiple tacklers and gets out of a potential negative yardage play. Mason finished with 3 Touchdowns, 551 Passing Yards, 2 Rushing Touchdowns, and a NFL QBR of 70.68. I would not be shocked if his stock rises during his senior campaign.
[player_tooltip player_id="104081" first="JJ" last="Kohl"] Ankeny QB Class of 2023 Hudl
[player_tooltip player_id="104081" first="JJ" last="Kohl"] has had a amazing spring so far. He won Positional MVP at Under Armor Ohio and generated interest from schools like Iowa, Iowa State, Penn State, and Illinois. He has a great arm with above average accuracy and is a sneaky quick athlete who can shock people with his mobility at times. JJ also has a massive frame, standing at 6’6 and weighing 210 pounds according to his Hudl profile. I’m really excited to see how JJ performs at Ankeny this season.
[player_tooltip player_id="24030" first="Jamison" last="Patton"] Des Moines Roosevelt QB/ATH Class of 2023 Hudl
[player_tooltip player_id="24030" first="Jamison" last="Patton"] is starting to receive a lot of hype - and it's with good reason. Sadly, Jamison only got to play two games his sophomore season, but in those two games he played great. Jamison has amazing playmaking ability and can escape a sack and turn it into a 10 yard gain before you know it. Jamison has a quality arm and can make contested throws at an above average level. In two games he put up 2 Touchdowns, 367 Passing Yards, 3 Rushing Touchdowns, and a NFL QBR of 68.96. I believe that Jamison is about to have a breakout junior season and get college notice.
[player_tooltip player_id="104098" first="Jaxon" last="Smolik"] Dowling QB Class of 2023 Hudl
[player_tooltip player_id="104098" first="Jaxon" last="Smolik"] is going to generate a lot of eyes this upcoming year. Jaxon helped Dowling reach the semi finals and stepped up when starting QB Jake Steingreaber got COVID-19 and had to sit out. He performed well versus a juggernaut Ankeny team and put up the most points against them of any team they faced the entire season. Jaxon is great at anticipating coverages and finding who is going to be open before the play starts. He has great ball placement and knows his mismatches on the field. Jaxon finished with 6 Touchdowns, 794 Passing Yards, and a NFL QBR of 89.5. I believe [player_tooltip player_id="104098" first="Jaxon" last="Smolik"] is going to breakout his junior season and believe he's going to gain collegiate notice pretty soon.
