Last week we presented an offensive positional breakdown of the 2023 class. We will do the same for the 2022 class. We’re putting a spotlight on the top 10 quarterbacks that have made their way onto our rankings with their play on the field or at camps over the past several months.
1. [player_tooltip player_id="26242" first="Daniel" last="Ayala"], West Mesa: Our top QB in the 2022 class recently traveled to Florida with his 7x7 team out of San Antonio, TX for a prestigious national tournament. Ayala performed well, which should only boost his recruiting stock. He’s already drawing interest from colleges. Nobody personifies the revival of West Mesa football more than Ayala.
2. [player_tooltip player_id="26234" first="Dylan" last="Quartieri"], Raton: The top 2022 QB in Class 3A has the tools to excel at the next level, including size (6-2), accuracy and arm strength. He’s taken virtual visits with colleges and has been invited to play in the Hawaii Tiki Bowl in Honolulu. Quartieri and RB [player_tooltip player_id="138053" first="Cayden" last="Walton"] promise to be one of the top offensive backfields in the state this fall.
3. [player_tooltip player_id="26232" first="Brandon" last="Furbee"], Farmington: Furbee’s transfer from Grants to Farmington probably a few eyebrows around the state, but from his perspective, it makes perfect sense. Furbee desires to play at the next level and moving up a notch in competition (Class 4A to 5A) should help him. He’s 6-4, 225 pounds with a 3.92 GPA. College coaches are watching. Furbee is already competing on the summer camp and 7x7 circuits.
4. Luc Jaramillo, Santa Fe: Santa Fe only played two games this spring, so we didn’t get a chance to see Jaramillo much considering he suffered an injury in the first game against Rio Rancho. Jaramillo and RB [player_tooltip player_id="26265" first="Martell" last="Mora"] will spearhead the improving Demons offense in the fall.
5. [player_tooltip player_id="134997" first="Lucas" last="Coriz"], St. Michael’s: If Quartieri is the top QB in Class 3A, Coriz isn’t far behind. Classic dual threat quarterback. The battle between Jaramillo and Coriz this fall will be must-see high school football.
6. [player_tooltip player_id="26254" first="Aiden" last="Rosser"], Onate (Organ Mountains): The Knights are just 1-13 in the past two seasons, and their record isn’t much better over the past half dozen seasons or so. So, a guy like Rosser isn’t going to get much love. But now that Las Cruces and Centennial are breaking in new QBs for the fall, Rosser jumps to the front of the line.
7. [player_tooltip player_id="134908" first="Colton" last="Graham"], Hobbs: Graham enjoyed a solid spring season, especially in the final two games against Artesia and Onate. He threw for 649 yards and 5 touchdowns. Graham and WR [player_tooltip player_id="137921" first="Kaden" last="Trevino"] should be a formidable duo in the fall..
8. [player_tooltip player_id="26253" first="Dallas" last="Boyd"], Las Cruces: Boyd inherits the Bulldawgs job from [player_tooltip player_id="26160" first="Marcos" last="Lopez"], so he has large shoes to fill. But Boyd has been described by hos coach as tough and an athlete who should torment opposing defenses both running and throwing. He’ll benefit from having one of the best offensive lines in the state protecting him.
9. [player_tooltip player_id="134979" first="Anthony" last="Mello"], Alamogordo: Mello threw for 570 yards and 7 touchdowns in the spring for the Tigers. Now that prolific RB [player_tooltip player_id="26190" first="Sean" last="Hays"] has graduated, Alamogordo could lean on Mello and the passing game more in 2021.
10. [player_tooltip player_id="26255" first="Daniel" last="Granados"], Mayfield: The Trojans could have one of the most dynamic offenses in Class 5A in the fall, and directing the offense will be Granados, who has an array of weapons at his disposal. He threw for 347 yards and 3 TDs in the spring.
