Especially at smaller schools, this is an excellent way to put yourself in position to earn that scholarship money and make more opportunities for yourself. A lot of guys might be dual-sport athletes, but to play 3 sports and have a significant role in all 3 is definitely something that will draw attention. We had numerous athletes reach out and show us what they can do in multiple sports, with a ton of 2A athletes in the mix. Take a look at some 3-sport athletes across the state:
Matthew McClelland Matthew McClelland 6'2" | 185 lbs | QB Arete Prep | 2022 State AZ , QB Arete Prep ’22
Mcclelland is actually a 4-sport athlete as he plays football, basketball, baseball, and golf for 2A Arete Prep. To say he is a hardworking kid is an understatement. Having the QB1 role is a big responsibility itself, yet Mcclelland not only manages 4 sports, but excels in all 4 and holds a 4.2 GPA. He’s a dual threat QB and put up strong numbers by throwing for 1,567 and 12 TD’s and rushng for 826 yards and 10 TD’s. Big opportunities ahead for Mcclelland.
Cooper Ross Cooper Ross 6'5" | 245 lbs | TE Heritage Academy | 2022 State AZ , TE, Heritage Academy ’22
Ross plays football, basketball, and baseball for Heritage and excels at everything he does. He’s big frame TE at 6’5″ 245lbs that is dominant over every opponent in 8-man football and is a complete mismatch in terms of size, speed, and athleticism. He was defensive player of the year in basketball for Heritage as well. In baseball, he plays 1st base and hit .415 on the year. Tremendous athlete all around and is only scratching the surface of his potential.
Cael Stewart Cael Stewart 6'5" | 210 lbs | QB Blue Ridge | 2022 AZ , QB, St. Johns ’22
Stewart was new to Arizona sports as he transferred in from New Mexico, but it didn’t take him long to turn heads. He plays football, basketball and baseball for 2A St. Johns. He stands tall in the pocket and delivers throws with torque. He shows a solid leaping ability as he can dunk in basketball. Stewart is a threat on the diamond as well, as he’s posted videos of him hitting bombs. Big time athlete in 2A with a tremendous upside.
Phillip Braxton, DB, Cesar Chavez ’24
Braxton was a 3-sport varsity letterman at Cesar Chavez as he took his talent to the gridiron, court, and track. He saw a good amount of play time for a freshman against South Mountain and was able to rack up a few tackles and force a PBU. He is still growing into his frame, but he showed solid coordination and body control in basketball, which will translate to the field well.
Sam Terpestra, QB, Glendale Prep ’22
Terpestra plays football, basketball, and baseball for Glendale Prep, and showcased his athleticism in all 3 sports. He was a 1st team all-region QB and continues to develop into a dangerous gunslinger for 2A ball. Versatile baseball kid as he can pitch, play the field, and can hit. He’s a key player in basketball as well and the best all-around athlete at Glendale Prep, and will only continue to get better and produce in all 3 sports.
Eric Lira Eric Lira 5'11" | 180 lbs | WR Mesquite | 2021 State AZ , WR, Mesquite HS ’21
Lira was one of the best WR’s in the state and is committed to Southwest Minnesota State for football, but is an excellent all-around athlete. He had a big performance in the 4A state championship to win the game, and is an explosive receiver. He played football, basketball, and ran track for Mesquite and was a key player in every sport. He translates track speed to the football field, and athleticism and body control from basketball to the field as well.
Marcus Oberriter Marcus Oberriter 5'9" | 150 lbs | ATH Holbrook | 2023 State AZ , QB, Holbrook ’23
The small town sophomore competes in football, wrestling, and baseball for 2A Holbrook. He started at QB his freshman and sophomore years and is developing well, and is an extremely hardworking and gritty kid. He wrestled at 135’s this past year, and did a great job on the baseball diamond as well. Oberriter consistently works on his craft in the offseason and is a solid all-around athlete for Holbrook.
