Nobody has to tell Osceola Fundamental High School head football coach Cody Montgomery about the pandemic. He and his team know the feeling too well.
Coming off a frustrating 2-7 season in 2020, the Warriors really never got untracked – and as the returning players and newcomers found out this spring, getting this program turned around will take plenty of hard work and a summer full of dedication.
Other than the two wins against rival Seminole and Palm Harbor University, the program can only get some motivation on the losses, and that will be the thing that drives the Warriors this year.
What the 2021 season will need to be about are the rising seniors (2022). This is a group that has talent and experience, and with those setbacks and Covid, these prospects are the ones who need to be accountable and push the younger athletes.
Among those rising seniors who will need to step up include well-rounded quarterback Riley Allen (5-11, 195 – 3.93 GPA, 1120 SAT, 21 ACT), who has what it takes on and off the playing field.
The Warriors will also rely on Matthew Berdychowski (DE, 6-2, 205), Aiden Beresford (P, 6-0, 145 – 2.8 GPA), Tyler Boule (OL/DL, 5-10, 245 – 3.67 GPA, 1090 SAT, 22 ACT), Devon Cartagena (OL/DL, 6-2, 245 – 3.89 GPA – 1060 SAT), Emmanuel Brooks (DB, 6-1, 170), Kaleb Harrold (Slot/HB, 5-8, 165) and two-way lineman Jarod Jones (6-3, 270).
Also, keep an eye on Coltan McClain (DE/OL, 6-1, 220 – 3.1 GPA), Cortland Mitchell (LB/S, 6-1, 210 – 3.95 GPA, 30 ACT), Cody Norris (DT, 5-10, 266 – 2.6 GPA), Dylan Smith (DE/TE, 6-3, 217 – 2.7 GPA), Maikeli Tuinakauvadra II (LB/HB, 5-10, 225 – 3.0 GPA, 1030 SAT) and Matthew Wilson (OL/DL, 6-1, 255).
UNDERCLASSMEN WILL NEED TO CONTRIBUTE
What Coach Montgomery and his staff will be looking for this summer and into the 2021 season is a contribution from Class of 2023 performers Ivan Brown (RB/OLB/WR, 5-9, 175), Evan Futch (OC/DT, 5-11, 230), Owen Hinote (QB/CB/FS), Zack Hubble (OL/DL, 6-1, 185), Raymond Lewis (OG/DL, 6-1, 280), Giovanni Loschiavo (DT) and offensive lineman Austin Ziniel.
While the Class of 2024 lacks experience and important playing time, there are a number of promising football players who can take advantage of an opportunity by working hard.
Receiver Reece Allen, Nathan Carter (RB/DB/WR), Brogan Coleman (OLB), Dylan Freese (RB), Elijah Gaddy (CB), Cord Gerdes (WR), Jeremy Jenkins (TE/LS/DE), Jacob Martin (WR), Jack Moraniec (QB), Christopher Washington (CB) and offensive lineman Ben Watson are rising sophomores, who will be given that chance.
